generator use

Would like to know about generator use in national parks, as many don't have electrical hookups. Thank you for any info, Dave

  • It seems like most parks are on a 8AM to 8PM generators hours schedule. That may vary by park. And over officious CG hosts may try to impose their own limits. We had that happen at Lassen Volcanic last year. Our fridge stopped working on propane for some mysterious reason (it healed itself eventually). And so I wanted to run the generator for several hours morning and evening to try to keep it cool. The CG host came over and complained even tho I was well within the posted hours. Turns out some woman in a site well away from mine didn't want to hear any generators at any time. I tried to reason with her to no avail and she eventually swapped sites with another one farther away.
  • Ummmm, if you have an internet connection why not go to the park website?
  • The park I am contemplating to stay at has quiet hours from 10pm to 6am. I wouldn't run my generator from 8 to 8, but that is me personally.
  • There are also rule changes depending in weather conditions. If there is a Red Flag condition many restrictions change accordingly.
An example would be morning use only. Another would be that only onboard generators can be used, no portables.
Each park and ranger district has the authority to control and change generator use as conditions change.

    Yes, they are used.

    Now that is really useful(NOT).

  • Different parks have different rules for the hours that generators can be used. You can go to nps.gov and look up the particular park you are interested in, and then download the brochure for the particular campground, which will list the allowable generator hours.
