Gettysburg area

I am planning a trip for 3 campers for next year. ONe stop is going to be at Gettysburg. Looking for input on where to stay.

Also, How many days should we plan on staying there?

thanks
  • Drummer Boy Campground is pretty popular. I've stayed there and found it to be adequate for visiting the battlefield. I like the pull troughs in the 300 section.

I have stayed at Granite Hill Campground for the Blue Grass Festival. It was okay, but not a nice as Drummer Boy IMHO.

As far as the length of stay, it depends on how far you want to drill down into the history of the place. A trip to the visitor's center and museum, and self guided audio walking tour or even an audio car tour or bus tour of the battle field can be accomplished in one day. Side trips to places like Hershey Park, Harpers Ferry, the battlefield at Antietam, makes a length of stay infinite
  • Drummer Boy used to be the top pick for campgrounds but new management a number of years ago pushed them way down on the list. Granite Hill is good but make sure you don't wind up on what they call a "post site". We like Artillery Ridge. It's a bit "rustic" (or at least was) compared to what Drummer Boy was, but it's well run and you can take horseback riding trips right from the campground through the battlefields. If I remember correctly, it's a little further out of town but it's very quiet there.
  • We were at Gettysburg Campground this past May. Place was clean, well maintained and nice sites....would return again!

  • Missed the part as to how long to stay. That depends on you. If you want to soak in every little detail of the park, all the statues, memorials and dedications, it can take quite a while. If you want to drive the park and just hit the highlights like Little Round Top and Devils Den, a few days is enough.
  • Gettysburg campground is our favorite.

Spend at least 2 full days. Start at the National Park Service Visitor center. Take in as many NPS ranger programs as possible.

We stayed at Artillery Ridge a few years ago and enjoyed it very much. Really cool with the horse corrals and stalls, and the "horse tours" are great.

You can do the audio car tour (CDs available everywhere, usually the various campgrounds will have them in the camp store) in one full day. It is a HUGE "battleground", encompasses the town and surrounding areas.

One thing to do that can be interesting is to find monuments from your own state, I think I remember reading that every state involved in the Civil War has at least one monument to fallen soldiers at Gettysburg. If you are really into the Civil War, detailed tours and reenactments are run regularly.
  • NPS Tour Guide is a better deal than bus for multiple persons and well worth the cost.
