Why is it that campgrounds are held to a higher standard than other venues of travel?
What cancellation,refund policy do you expect from an airline, cruise ship, hotel? Et Al? That airline will fill your seat in a holiday time split second at twice the price. Yet noone expects them to refund that doubledip. The cruise liner, hotel, camp will have a tougher time. If they can (we) can reserve the entire visit on short notice, it would be likely at a discounted rate. Thus the substantial cancellation policy.
I find RA easy to use, reasonable in policy.
Making reservations is akin to what my Pa likened to buying oats. He said if you want good clean oats (prime site) , they come at a price. If you are satisfied with oats that have been through the horse(whats left), well, they are cheaper.
We use a different online res. system more suitable for our camp.

I like having and reading nice discussions about anything. But, I think when you feel the need to CAPITALIZE you are no longer having a discussion but are now ARGUING and SHOUTING. In a argument nobody comes out looking good, especially the person telling everyone to POUND SAND. Not sure I even understand what that is supposed to mean.

Big Kahuna is a senior member with over 12,500 posts since 2003. I find his actions here(ie: pound sand) out of character.

He, of all people, with over 12,500 posts know that when you post anything on this forum, some others are going to disagree.

Me thinks that we don't know the whole story for whatever reason.

As far as everybody's opinion who thinks its OK to charge $17.75 to change or cancel a reservation, when the campground STILL rents out the space?

We are all sorry re your father-in-law. When I first read your thread I thought winter has gotten to somebody but then realized you are in sunny Florida, not cold below zero nights in northern Nevada or much of the rest of the nation. Count your blessings, you have warm!

That said there is no need to post a topic looking for sympathy and then learning that folks almost unaminously disagree with your position; tell them their opinion is no more right (or wrong) than yours, but if you don't agree with me pound sand . You did not need to post the thread if you did not want to read about how others feel about the RA system. Not one person that took time to respond to you told you to pound sand. Most just said the reservation system 'is what it is' and live with it.

After some further research

The Reserve America contracts with the federal government are on an agency basis, not one complete contract.

US Forest Service sites often have a reservation fee added, and some have a higher cancellation fee than $10.
