Have I mentioned I DETEST Reserveamerica?

Had to cancel two sites for over Christmas. $17.75 per site to cancel.

And since I had to cancel the credit card that I had charged it on awhile back, they have to send me a check; EIGHT WEEKS to process.

What a ripoff. I understand charging for a night if you forget to cancel, wait till the last minute or if the site doesn't get rented, but if they rent the space out, $17.75 per site seems high.
  • Really? Comparing a campground to an airline? And I guaranGDtee you if I cancelled an airline reservation it wouldn't take EIGHT WEEKS to get a refund.
  • Reserveamerica very clearly states there is a $17.75 cancellation fee. Even if someone else comes along and reserves it, you still used their computer system and associated personnel to make that reservation. The cost for running the reservation system has nothing to do with costs incurred by the state park campground where you were planning to go.

We had to cancel at Dead Horse Point SP in UT a few weeks ago and we're also out the cancellation fee. We knew that was a possibility but accepted that risk when we made the reservation.

In Fl and most places, cancellations more than a week or two in advance you don't pay.
I guess we're just unlucky. We've never made a reservation anywhere that there wasn't a cancellation fee.

BTW, the eight weeks you were quoted is a CYA. My guess is you'll get your check inside of a month.
  • I'd assume if you hadn't cancelled that credit card, the credit would have shown up right away on your card. Back in Aug. I was camping for 3 days at a Fl state park. I had to leave after one night due to a death in the family. The refund was on my credit card the following day.
  • What do airlines charge for a trip cancellation or change? On some fares if you cancel you lose the whole fare. Changes can be $100 - $150, and chances are greater that seat will not go empty, compared to a camping spot.

As said, the rules are stated up front. If one detests the rules, don't make a reservation in the first place.

Also, if the reservation was made on a credit card, merchants are typically charged a fee to process the refund, so they have to pay a fee and percentage on both ends of the transaction.
  • Eight weeks for a refund this day and age is ridiculous. It isn't a question of whether I can afford to wait two months, it's the point of it.

We camp in Florida state parks 8-10 times a year, which are usually booked MONTHS in advance. The spaces will be booked. Why $17.75? Why not $10?
Try as you might, things pop up and you need to move trips a week.

I understand CGs in Maine charging a NR night upfront; they have to make a years income in 4-5 months. In Fl and most places, cancellations more than a week or two in advance you don't pay.

Let Amazon run the system. $17.75 to cancel?

    It's a ripoff.

It should $10 at the most.
  • Is it their fault you canceled the credit card? Sorry but I don't see the injustice here, how much money (not much I suspect), do you actually have to wait for? As noted above if there were no cancelations fees (which are disclosed when you book a site), it would be chaos with folks booking multiple sites and just showing up wherever they wanted. Get over it. :R

I've booked plenty of private campgrounds in prime locations like Maine during the summer where you pay a full night up front as a non-refundable deposit from day one.

When you chose to make a reservation and paid in full for a holiday date, they told you in writing exactly what your canx penalty would be, right? How is that a rip-off?

    X2

They tell you up front the cost of cancellation. If there was no penalty people could for example reserve the same date at several places then cancel all but the one with the best weather or something like that.

18 bucks, come on get over it. It's part of the convenience of reserving a spot. RA and the CG have costs associated with making your reservation. They shouldn't have to eat that because you change your mind.
  • 8 weeks for a refund by check seems excessive. We have also had to pay cancellation fees a couple times but knew what it would cost beforehand since RA tells us up front.
