How far do you post in advance?

Just wondering, is there a waiting list on campsites in areas? How far do you plan in advance? Is it all a logistical game or do you fly by the seat of your pants? How far do you plan ahead?

  • So Dutch, are you going to be in Midway again this winter?

OP to give you an idea of my planning, as I post this evening at 9:30pm (central), I pulled out the atlas to see which direction I'll head in the morning. And though I only travel summers now, my wife and I FTd for nearly 15 yrs and never planned more than a general direction - like east/west/north or south today. Wintering though in SW FL, we did solve the advance reservation dilemma by owning our own RV lot in Naples.
  • We reserved our site last winter for this winter in Florida.
  • We've found this summer while on our trip in the New England states that reservations have been necessary. For real vacation destinations (Bar Harbor, for example), reservations 2-3 months out were necessary. We waited until a couple of weeks out for some destinations and couldn't get a site where we wanted, so had to find a place a little farther away. It really depends on where you're going and what time of year, or if it's a holiday.

When en route, we don't make reservations, but will call ahead an hr. or two before arriving. It occurred to me that we'd need a place for 1 night in Brunswick GA on our way home, and it would be the Friday of Labor Day weekend. It's a really nice place with easy on/off I-95. We've stayed there before with no problems calling an hr. before arriving. Because of the holiday weekend, there are no sites. So, it really does depend on when.
  • It depends on when and where we're going. For the winter in Florida we start making reservations for the next winter before we leave during the current winter. As mentioned, for the best site selection at state and national controlled campgrounds, advance reservations are usually advised depending on the season and popularity of the location. The desired length of the stay is also a factor in deciding if reservations are preferred, with short stays of a few days to a week often readily available, especially in private parks. Week ends and holidays are also times when advanced planning is often a must.
  • We camp at state parks and if you want to get the better spots or even get hookups, you have to RSVP. We make them 9 mos in advance so later this week, we'll make them for next Memorial day.
