  • Hunting Island State Park is one of our favorites. The area is surprisingly tropical as a destination for us "northerners". The Vietnam war scene in Forrest Gump was filmed in the "jungle" area of the park. A really great activity is to ride bikes on the hard-packed beach (towards the lighthouse) during low tide, and then ride back to the campground through the Jungle trail. When we were there in November, the campground was quite full and campers would line up at the office at 7:00 AM to try to get a beachfront site. Beaufort is 16 miles away so you should get your grocery shopping done before heading to the park.
  • Nice park. Get a spot near the beach for maximum enjoyment. Reservations a must.
  • You received a bunch of positive and a negative so far. And I understand that.

First, it is an incredible place to camp, especially if you have a front "ish" site on the beach loop. We spent a week on 39 I think it is? That was a whole different experience than the back loops that we've been on for years.

We will always make Hunting Island an annual trip. It's that good!

But as mentioned, we have had our share of miserable mosquito infested and flooded out trips too. But that won't stop us. We're going again in June this year!
  • They won't let me live there, but I spend as much time as I can between October and February when I'm in the area. Probably my favorite state park. We always try to get a beachfront site. We don't care too much for the sites in the back and tend to stay away from them.
  • Very busy, many sites are in swampy areas where mosquitoes will make for an uncomfortable stay. Outdated showerhouses. Camped there Jan. 2014.

Its a great place to go to...

We actually don't like the beach side there as well as the shaded tree sites. There was all kinds of beach traffic when we was there one time way up into the evening...

Only a short walk to the beach from the tree line.

  • We stayed there last year. Very large campground and the park includes a Lighthouse and a free fishing pier and miles of beach. We had a full service site in the woods. Very private and a shortwalk to the great beach but tight turns to get in. Beach area was more crouded area. Had to go to the store to get WIFI. Nice park stays full during the season so need to get a reservation.
  • It is a wonderful state park. Great beach, tall pine and other trees provide shade to help keep things cool in the summer. There are basically two sides to the park. Beach side has 30 amp service, other, larger section has 50 amp service. Nice nature trails. We try to go 3-4 times a year. Very hard to get beach side spots. Busiest state park in sc.
