Interesting Places to see and do

Wow, great lst for OKC.

We stayed overnight in August 2011, planning to see our nephew (who left the day before for a funeral in Canada) and to see the sights, especially the memorial where our nephew had helped with rescue operations.

It was 110 degrees, so we ended up immersed up to our necks in the campground pool and moved on west the next day for higher elevations.

So I'll save this list and try again.

Oklahoma City - #1 The National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum is FABULOUS! Plan on most of a whole day.
#2 Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum (The OKC Federal Building bombing)
#3 Bricktown - don't miss the get on/get off boat ride and get off at Toby Keith's "I love this bar". If you are military you get a free hamburger and fries
#4 The Capitol Building and grounds. There is an oil well rig on the front lawn
#5 The Myriad Botanical Gardens & Crystal Bridge built by I.M. Pei. Beautiful!
#6 The All Indian Nations dance contest at the OKC Convention Center
Google it for the dates. We've been there three times - that's how good it is.
#7 The National Softball Hall of Fame
If you are military retired with an I.D. you can stay at Tinker AFB, one of our favorites.

You might want to pick a state and ask for the top ten attractions, I remember about a year ago someone started one for the State of Oregon and it had some wonderful suggestion.
If your ever in Washington State, I would recommend 1) The 101 loop around the Peninsula, and 2) when you get to Port Angeles take the Ferry to Victoria 3) and when you see the sign for Ruby Beach, you stop even in the rain 4) and then don't miss the Hoh either. 5) Mima Mounds if you find yourself driving on I 5 just south of Olympia. 6) Olympia, find a place to park and walk the downtown area, its like a blast of the 60ies past. 7) Mt St Helens with a stop at the Lava tubes. 8) Leavenworth, Lake Chelan taking the boat up the lake, Winthrop
9) Grand Coulee Dam, 10) Palouse, in the fall.

Darn I missed that Fallen Roof Ruin this summer. We went up Moki Dugway twice too. And I thought we turned off at every ruin.

If you are into visiting ruins, I enjoyed Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado. The ranger led walks to the Long house was great.


If you are willing to go on your own, my favorite is False Kiva at Canyonlands National Park. Ask for directions at the Islands in the Sky Visitor Center:


Two other favorites are in the Cedar Mesa area - House on Fire in Mule Canyon (off UT95 west of Blanding, Utah):


and Fallen Roof Ruin in Road Canyon (about 20 miles north of the Moki Dugway off of UT 261):


Do an internet search for directions for both of these - they are not on well marked trails...

Pendleton, Oregon. Two interesting adventures. #1 underground tour about the early days of the Chinese with their laundries, how they were not allowed above ground and their opium dens showing the wooden blocks they would put their heads on so as to not choke if they were to regurgitate. #2 Tour where they make the expensive Pendleton blankets. Interesting to learn the history of the blankets that are now machine made and not made by Indians for trade.

The National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center outside Baker City, Oregon. One could read a thousand history books and never learn as much as they would in a 1 1/2 hour tour of this place. It features what it was really like to travel the Oregon Trail from St. Louis to Oregon City, Oregon. If you are ever anywhere near Baker City if you don't take the time to explore this Interpretive Center, you are doing yourself a dis-justice.

The Milwaukee Art Museum. The building itself is a work of art. It has wings that spread out when the museum opens and the wings shut as the museum closes. When it is open it looks like a giant sail boat with Lake Michigan as its back drop. Even if you don't tour the art museum it is worth the time to watch the wings open.
