Itinerary Suggestions for Oregon?

Hi All!

We are on an 8 week tour of Oregon, 2 weeks into it. This is our first big trip in our 1966 Restored Airstream. The first week was spent at Nehalem Bay State Park, exploring Astoria, Manzanita and Cannon Beach Areas. Wonderful! And a great state park.

Now we are at Tillicum Beach near Yachats and have enjoyed it immensely. Not as nice a park as Nehalam, but a great site on the ocean.

We are leaving here and headed to Florence, Harbor Vista Park, and then onto Diamond Lake RV Park, near Crater Lake. Our final reservation is at Emigrant Lake near Ashland.

We will have another 3 weeks to spend in Oregon, and I thought I would seek out the advice of you knowledgeable folks, as to where you would spend those last weeks.

We like to move slowly, no more than 4-6 hours driving. We have pets, and we love water. No kids, and we love small towns and country roads.

We can dry camp and have some limited solar. The only restriction we have is that we must be able to have cell phone reception (verizon) for staying in touch with work and family.

What is on YOUR do not miss list in this beautiful state?
  • Up to Bend from K Falls and then east to Burns and south to French Glen. On the way south you'll visit Malheur Wildlife preserve,HUGE, and then to the Glen. Plan on spending several days there visiting the Diamond Craters and trasveling up and around Steens Mountain, which is a huge fault block mtn. There are several hot springs in the area, one at Malheur area, one at nthe south end of the Alvord desert road and Buffalo at the north end of the desert which is so hot that there are signs warning folks not to approach them. The high desert is awesome.
  • If you liked Nehalem - you might like J.Honeyman St. Pk - just south of Florence (Our fav. town on the 101 coast.)

  • If you can't get into Honeyman SP,then try Woahink Lake RV park as they're great. There is ATV access right from the park like at Honeyman and you can walk up the hill behind the park and right out onto the dunes. Was down there with my 91 y/o aunt several weeks ago and I think she was trying to do me in. We went to both lighthouses,Sea Lion Caves, Fast and furious dune buggy trip and shopping in Floence.
  • If you're going to Diamond Lake then by all means visit Crater Lake. I would then head out to 97 north up to Crescent, then take 61 to 46 and follow that to Bend Or. Lots of nice small to large lakes for over niters. Beautiful drive as well. I would then head out of Bend on 20 towards Sisters. Go past Sisters to the Metolious turn off and head towards Camp Sherman. There's 9 campgrounds along the Metolious. 2 RV parks as well. One of our fav places to go during the summer. You could then back track to Sisters and take 126 to Redmond and to Prineville. Then take 26 out to John Day then take 395 to Burns, then 205 to Frenchglen and Page Springs CG. The Steens mountains offer one of the most spectacular views of mountains in Oregon.
  • We stayed at East Lake in the Newberry Crater Natl Monument last year. There was so much to see and the fishing was great in early June. There is cell service but you have to drive down to where the waterfall parking lot is. Oh yes, we also got service at the top of the mountain (Paulina Peak). Great views from up there, I think they said you could see 3 states (including OR). Our cousins stayed at Paulina Lake, that's where they fished. I'd love to go back there and have a longer time to go check things out.
  • I agree with heading north on 97 after Ashland. I would then head to the Northeast corner of the State and visit the Wallowa range via Pendleton, and Joseph. You can also visit Hell's Canyon.
  • Don't miss the McKenzie River area in the Cascades -- wonderful hiking and mountain biking. This is Koosah Falls:

And this is Paradise Campground, aptly named:

  • We spent July 2012 along the coast, except for several days in the Crater Lake area. Started in the south at Harris Beach SP, then Bullard's Beach SP, South Beach SP (loved Newport!), Nahalem Bay SP,and finished our run at Ft Stevens SP. Awesome coast, very fine SP's, and for a Florida boy to spend the month of July in jeans, not shorts, priceless!!
