Looking for a good place around Pensacola area? Ideas?

My wife and I are trying to figure out where we want to take our “new to us” travel trailer on our first trip. We’re in southern Missouri, and we’re wanting to head towards the ocean…..maybe straight south to Galveston Texas? Maybe somewhere around the Gulfport / Pensacola Florida area?

What are some nice RV park areas around there that aren’t super expensive (some I saw were over $120+ a night), but have nice amenities, and are close to the beach? I found a few around Pensacola Beach that looked nice…..but it was almost as much to stay at a decent hotel vs. the RV Park. And most of the RV parks I saw still require you to drive a few miles to make it to the beach….can you find RV parks right on the water? Having a small 19ft travel trailer, am I better trying to find a camping area vs. an RV park?

Any suggestions would be great!
  • Topsail Hill has a tram that runs down to the beach on a regular schedule. Very nice park and beach.

We spent 2 weeks at Buccaneer SP in Waveland MS, just west of Gulfport. Nice park, spacious sites and a fairly short walk to the Gulf beach. If you go here, be sure to read the reviews on rvparkreviews for warnings on getting there. There are some really nasty grade crossings, one that I wasn't comfortable doing in a motor home.
  • Thanks for all of the info! You have given me several places to check out! Fort Pickens looks great!!
  • You can walk to the beach at Fort Pickens, especially from Loop A. There is a boardwalk across the sand dunes.

It is a great place to stay, but be aware that it is down a 9 mile road (and back out again the same way.) So it is not so good for those who want to go and come.

Gulf State Park in Alabama is another good choice, though I do not think you can walk to the beach from the campground.
  • Big Laggon state park in Pensacola short walk from campground to beach or drive to beach at park or hi around to johnson beach. NAS Pensacola is very close to this park home of the blue angels and there is a very nice museum on site that is free. There is also Henderson beach state park in Destin, Grayton Beach state park close to seaside. St. Andrews state park in Panama City beach. All nice parks with their own different perks
  • I agree with dahkota that Ft. Pickens, in Pensacola, is nice. Another nice state park is Gulf State Park in Gulf Shores, AL. Some nice private parks are: Top Sail in Santa Rosa Beach, FL, Navarre Beach Campground in Navarre, FL., and Anchors Aweigh RV Park in Foley, AL. All are very nice private campgrounds and RV friendly.
  • You could stay at Fort Pickens, a National Park campground right on the beach. It has electric and water hook ups. Beautiful park...

Florida State Parks have quite a few campgrounds on the beach. All are nice and offer at least water and electric hook ups.
