This is where we stayed and really liked it. We took the ferry to Boston from Hingham, which was really cool. But - Wompatuck doesn't have FHU - electric is all you can get.

HI, Scusset beach is on the end(east end i think)of the cape cod canal. Great location for exploring the cape and the plymouth area. They have water and elec, and a dump sta. Hard to get in And Pinewood lodge is a great park with full hookups.paul....Waumpatuk has water and elec and a dump sta and is in Hingham and a big park.

Boston Minuteman is a great little place, good for Boston but not so much for the other areas of interest. Normandy Farms as others have said is a great place and mor central than Boston Minuteman. On the Cape, we love Bayview but that is more convienent to the islands etc. Plymouth is most likely the most central taking route 3 north or south to get to where you want to go. Winter Island might be good for Boston but living in the next town over, I would not be caught dead there, old Coast Guard parking lot that they now park RV's on. No sewer or dump station, you need to go to the waste water plant down the road to dump.

We've stayed several times at Sweetwater Forest cg in Brewster on the Cape. It's about mid-Cape and yes the traffic to Provincetown can be a slow crawl.
If you camp on the Cape take your bikes - the Rail Trail is a nice, easy paved multi-use trail. DW & I enjoyed the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History, the National Seashore Salt Marsh Visitor Center (interesting canoe trips), biking to the beach, and the rather interesting sights in Provincetown.
We did a day trip to the Whaling Museum in New Bedford but were rather disappointed in it. Both of us much preferred the private museum in Nantucket (but the ferry will cost you $$$.)
Brewster also has the General Store and an ice creme shop next to it. And either while biking or driving you should stop at Arnold's for a meal or snack.
We've done several whale watching trips from various ports including Provincetown. Nice, but now the novelty's worn off for us. Last summer I paid the $50 for a 7-day pass to drive on Race Point beach. Pack the cabanna & cooler, drive out on the sand, pull up a piece of beach, and relax for most of the day.

We used to stay at a cg in Gloucester, take the train to North Station, and hoof it around Boston. We took a Duck Boat tour and had a really humorous and informative driver / guide. You can do all or part of the Freedom Trail there. And do try one of the many family-owned restaurants in the North End.

If we were to go back to Boston itself I'd be giving Minuteman cg a try.

Silly me! I saw the "1 hour 12 mins" on Mapquest and translated that in my foggy brain to 112 miles! Yup, it's 60 miles indeed. BUT during peak season it will feel like 112! :B

I know lots of people think Normandy Farms is a great campground but I think is is a bit of a travel to the places the OP would like to visit, Boston, Plymouth, and Cape Cod.

Maybe a few days in Boston Plymouth area then a few days on the Cape would allow more seeing and an hour or two less driving.

And a good thought it is. It's 112 miles from Sandwich at the beginning of the Cape to Provincetown, at the end of the Cape. Something at the "elbow" as someone suggested is a great idea for Cape exploration. For Boston Minuteman KOA and Winter Island are probably better than Normandy Farms but Normandy isn't a bad options. Plimouth Plantation is well worth the visit. The rock is just a rock, really.

Yes, Plymouth Rock is just a part of the whole area. Mayflower II (replica of the Pilgrim's boat) is right there, along with Plimoth Plantation nearby ("Plimoth" being the olde English spelling of Plymouth). We found the visit fascinating.
