Moab

Very beginning stages of planning a trip to Moab a year from now, September, 2017. Temps/heat in September? DW does not do heat. Or should we get there in early October?

Campground recommendations please. We want at least water & electric. Stayed in a Moab motel 5 years ago but have never camped there
  • Over the past 10 years, I have visited the Moab area 5 times in September-October. In September you will have days in the 90s. On top of that the blazing sun will peal paint. If you can alter your schedule, October weather will be much better...downright perfect in fact.
  • Next year, avoid the week of October 14-22 as that is the week of the UEA convention. The early part of the week isn't bad, but the convention is that Thursday and Friday and since every school is out those two days, many families take the entire week off for vacation. Very busy time in town, on the roads and trails, and in the parks.
  • We've traveled to Moab twice a year for a number of years. September is too hot. October is much better. Suggest about mid month. We stay at Portals in the resort/owners section. It is pricey, but worth it to us.
  • Portal RV Park, in the back, privately owned section, is the best in the area.

Not sure, but, I'm pretty sure they let you stay back there in a 5'r.
  • We stayed at Spanish Trails summer 2014 and did not care for it either. Campground folks were nice enough, but not much shade, a good bit of dust (maybe not unique for moab), highway noise, and in a somewhat industrial area. We even left a day earlier than planned.

If it is just a place to sleep while you do other activities all day it is probably OK, but if you are spending several days to relax, it would not be my choice. To each his own.

PS - Don't miss Dead Horse STATE Park, across the street from Canyonlands. It was every bit as nice as Arches and Canyonlands, if not better.
  • Stay anywhere you want - BUT - my advice is to do it later in the season September is HOT. For the most part we never make reservations and really know little or care much about the Camp Grounds - we come to see the Canyons - River - Arches - and the people - so staying in any Cg is just fine for us.

If you are able to plan, IMHO September is the time to be in the Rockies - November in Utah (OK late October and all Winter) - and I would be remiss to not make that point.

    Best of luck,
  • We stayed at portal RV resort last month. We stayed in the owner section for the pool. Your RV had to be 10 years or less; we saw many fifth wheels. The owner section had concrete pads. Each one in owner section is different; ours was a pull thru and had a covered table and chairs. We liked it and would stay there again. It was close to downtown and the entrance to arches.
