NC State Fairgrounds - Christmas

My DD lives in Raleigh area (Holly Springs), and I am looking to take TT to visit for Christmas. I see NC State Fairgrounds has over 300 sites but does not accept reservations. Reviews look pretty good for what I am looking for -- place to park, sleep and be close to DD. My concern is if the park gets full the week of Christmas. I would hate to drive the 500 miles pulling the TT to not have a place to park. The neighborhood my DD lives is does not have any where I could park for even a few minutes without being at least a block away and then I couldn't stay long.

For those in the Raleigh area or those that travel there often, am I going to be able to get a spot that I can get into easily? Also any suggestions for alternate parks, if Fairgrounds is likely to be full?

  • thanks to all on this forum who have mentioned the Fairgrounds as a possible place to stay and a special thanks to blucrabbie for responding to this post. I stayed here for 6 nights while visiting DD, SIL and DGD during week of Christmas. Security folks that took payments were great. I felt very comfortable here; although, there was some part of drive from interstate that appeared a bit less secure neighborhood. Back into site was easy and most RV's were scattered throughout the park, rather than bunched together. My mom was concerned that we would be in a field all by ourselves with no one else around, but there were about a dozen other RV's of different types, so she was happy too. Even the cat seemed to like the place, she would go outside and walk around a bit (on her leash off course), but didn't seem to be disturbed by people coming and going at night.
  • blucrabbie, thanks for the reply, I was mainly concerned about at the availability. I thought I saw that the fairgrounds have a light display, so didn't know if they would be busy or not. I don't need an RV Park, but a place with electric and water so I can stay in my TT. I prefer staying in it over a hotel, and extra cost of pulling the TT and paying for camping is actually less than hotel for a few nights.
  • Please understand that this is not an RV Park. I really don't think you will have any issues at all camping at Christmas at the Fairgrounds. The demand for campsites in this area is just not high at all that time of year.
You can call 919-612-6767 a couple of days before you leave if that will help you. This is the number for the 24/7 Security who looks after the campground area. Also, Joel Keith is the Public Safety and Security Manager. His number is 919-839-4508.
Good luck. This is a great place to stay. We go there often even though we live in the Triangle.
Feel free to pm me if you have any more questions!
