Need rec for destination in west TX or NM

I heard that Las Cruces, NM is a well kept secret. I would be staying in Silver City if it were me but I would think its a bit out of your way.

Silver City would be colder than Las Cruces in January. It's nice though.

We too are in Elephant Butte NM at Elephant Butte RV Resort. Great little community outside of Truth or Consequences about 80 miles north of of Las Cruces. 140 south of Albuquerque. Biking and hiking in the area as well as kayaking on the lake.

Bottomless Lakes State Park outside of Roswell. Caballo State Park an hour north of Las Cruces on I25. Leasburg State Park, 10 minutes north of Las Cruces at Radium Springs. Rockhound State Park outside of Deming NM. Pancho Villa State Park in Columbus NM. Depends upon weather if they'll be above freezing during the day. I've always had good 4G at everyone of these to tie into the internet, or use our pads.

If you are at the Butte, the Bosque del Apache wildlife reserve is just up I-25. The Very Large Array is a ways west of Socorro on us 60

I vote for Las Cruces--we stayed there twice last summer-fall. Advice-if heading to Albuquerque or Santa Fe from Ft. Stockton -the oil field traffic from Ft. Stockton to Roswell on US 285 is really heavy and the road is in bad shape. We stopped going this route in 2016 and used I-10 heading west. Great decision for us. And we found Las Cruces as a bonus!

We checked in late one afternoon and were told the pool was under maintenance but would be available the next morning. Walked over with the missus just before dark and it was completely empty. The info marker stated it covered 1.75 acres, was up to twenty five feet deep and held 3.5 million gallons of water. Since wee planned to hit the road early the next day, I thought 'no way would it be anywhere near full before we left'. Well it was - even had little fish of some sort nipping on me when I was swimming around. I have no idea where they were while it was drained.

Edit to add - Hope you enjoy your visit to BB, its one of our favorite National Parks. Be sure to check out the 'ghost town' of Terlingua on the west side. The Starlight Theater has surprisingly good food and usually live entertainment and a local watering hole there, La Kiva, is the most unique bar I've ever been in.

If you are doing the Las Cruces tour be sure to try the Spotted Dog Brewery. Its just a little ways south of Old Mesilla at University
