Look at Delaware Seashore State Park at Indian River Inlet in Delaware
Might be closer and with Ocean City and Rehoboth and Bethany Beach you will have plenty to do.

I'll second Assateague Island National Seashore. Just a smidge over 700 miles from Indy... You can literally camp right on the beach and the wild horses are an added bonus.
And if camping right on the beach is what you're looking for, do it this year. We were there in May and I was talking to the workers digging out the beach front sites with a Bobcat. According to these guys, this is the last year the beach sites will be open. They're moving the ocean loops across the street next year and letting the sand reclaim the current loops. - Rangerman40ExplorerI'll second Assateague Island National Seashore. Just a smidge over 700 miles from Indy. The way to do this is leave one evening and stay the night at Cabelas in Wheeling WV then the rest of the way the next day and you'll be there by early afternoon. You can literally camp right on the beach and the wild horses are an added bonus.
- RGar974417ExplorerAssategue is great.Lot's to do. Take in the ranger demonstrations and keep your food inside or the horses will get it.The state park has one loop with electric. The national park has no hookups but 2 loops allow generators. We prefered the bayside campground because there is some grass and a few trees. Our site had direct access to the bay. Kiptopeke is about an hour south of Assategue but has full hookups. Huntington Beach State park in South Carolina is great. Some full hookups, the rest water and electric. Some sites are in the open and some in the woods. They have a small store. They have a good nature program which you should take advantage of.The home of the former owners is open for tours. You are about a mile of so south of Murrel's Inlet where they have a few good restaurants.Another great place is the Outer Banks. Plenty of choices with private campgrounds and National Parks Campgrounds. We stayed at the National Park Campground at Frisco. No hookups but you are on the ocean and the price was right at $13 a night with my Senior Pass. There's a grocery store gas station right across from the entrance. They allow generators. The Life Saving Museum at Rodnathe is neat. But any of them would be a long drive from Indiana.

Scusset Beach State Reservation in Sagamore,Ma. Right on the Cape Cod Canal and Cape Cod bay. Great striper fishing and a short hop to the Cape. Boston 40 miles up the road. Great beach a short walk . A whole lot closer than South Carolina. Rt90 straight to 495 south, turn left ,7 miles and you're there. Probably take a day and a half.
The OP didn't say where in Indiana he was, but Brick Yard to Cape Cod is 1000 miles. - moebedickExplorerScusset Beach State Reservation in Sagamore,Ma. Right on the Cape Cod Canal and Cape Cod bay. I think a 2 day drive is more realistic. We are looking at Hilton Head. Anyone out there have campground recommendations?
SC as a destination will mean some serious mountain roads that will slow you down.
VA and NC beaches will be closer for you. Some great places there.
We liked First Landing State Park in Virginia Beach, VA. http://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/first-landing#cabins_camping
Allstays state maps have a comprehensive listing of campgrounds. Here's the one for Virginia

and North Carolina. Take a look at campgrounds on the Outer Banks on this map
