Outer Banks Reviews Wanted

We are thinking of going to the Outer Banks, NC next spring for vacation. Anyone care to share their experiences there, good or bad. Campground recommendations/Reviews. We used to vacation at Topsail Island, NC but that was pre-camper and I didn't really notice any good campgrounds there. Thanks for your opinions...

  • Since we like to surf fish and drive the van onto the beach, we prefer further down Hatteras Island at Frisco Woods Campground. It is on the soundside of the island, but there is a beach access ramp nearby .....

  • It is still pretty windy and cool the first week of June. Water is very cold in the spring.
  • This place is amazing. We have been there the last two years. PM if you need info. Go and have a great time we certainly did. Larry
  • Yes, as Crowe said, the ocean was pretty rough while we were there. A lot of undertow and I suspect rip currents. Be careful swimming; there were no lifeguards.
  • Have made four trips to the Outer Banks, three at Camp Hatteras, 1 at the KOA. At the time we liked Camp Hatteras better but both have been rebuilt due to hurricane damage. What we loved about both was being right on the beach. However, the last time we went a series of storms had changed the shape of the ocean floor and swimming/boogie boarding were no longer that much fun due it being rougher. That may have changed as it's been a number of years since we've been there. Depending on when in the spring you go, it may still be too chilly for either. We love Pea Island Wildlife Refuge which is near there for walking and kayaking. You can drive back to Kitty Hawk to the Wright Brother's Museum, Jockey Ridge State Park, stores, restaurants, and other things to do. There had been a number of small amusement parks in the area as well. Other than weather-related stuff which you can't avoid all four trips there were quite nice.
  • Spent a few days at Hatteras KOA last May. Wonderful spot, right on the ocean. Campground was in nice shape, but there's been a hurricane through there since then. Jim Cantore was right across the street.:)

We rented a car in Kitty Hawk as we passed through and ran down to the Hatteras Lighthouse. Plenty of seafood restaurants and kitsch-y places.
  • Been once and stayed at Ocean Waves. Nice campground, a little tight for big rigs. Cross a sand dune and at the ocean. Not as crowded as a Myrtle Beach. We enjoyed it, don't know if we will go back or not. If we did, would look at staying at Camp Hattaras on the sound side.
  • been to Kitty Hawk RV a couple of times.

Nothing fancy but nice, quiet, friendly and right at the ocean.

The only thing missing was no fire pits. It just isn't the same without it to me but that's me. This worth it so far a location.
  • Been to the outer banks 1x, stayed at Camp Hattaras, very nice campground, sites on ocean side as well as bay side, I stayed on ocean side and had great time. Definitely plan on returning...

P.S. Love the quote on your profile, been there, done that!
