planning christmas eve furnace creek death valley

sorry if i'm a little slow (as in dumb) with this site, so bear (or is it bare) with me.
I love Death Valley, have been there several times, last time was when the weather went a little crazy (about six months ago) and the rain left most of the roads pretty much a mess. However, I love the Furnace Creek campground, and I know that it has been completeley renovated. I am more of a tent person than an RVer. Soooo, my question is, has anybody been there in the last three months, and just what has changed? And are reservations recommended or should I just take my chances (I usually get lucky...)Anyway, looking forward to any comments.

  • @bckari, you should bottle that. I know people at places and times who'd pay you anything you asked to come camp there for a few days.
  • thanks for your answers. i know that the Furnace Creek campground has been redone, and the sites have been re-numbered. after checking the new site map, it looks like the tent sites are 100-115. i'll probably get lucky, if not, the Sunset campground (not my favorite) is also open. but, considering the temperatures this time of year, the tent sites should be up for grabs. actually, the last time i went through Death Valley, I was coming back from Lone Pine where I got seriuosly flooded out (this was during this past summer). the hilarious part is, my brother and i try to go camping a lot, and no matter where we go it rains. we have been to death valley three times....and every time....we got rained on. in death valley. it's really pretty funny. thanks again for your answers, and your help. :-)
  • According to the web site, Furnace creek camp is open. If you are tent camping you might find a spot along the back side in the trees, but maybe you can call and see if there are any vacancies and make a reservation. Be advised they have changed the numbering of the sites so you might want to look at the web site for a new map so you get the right site reserved. We used to go every year between Christmas and new years but always made reservations a couple of months in advance. DV can be busy at the campground at this time but becomes almost empty right after New years. For more info on road conditions go to the web site and click on "Morning Report". Our preferred time to enjoy DV is the first week of March right after daylight savings start, makes for a little longer light time in the evening. Here is the web site for campgrounds in DV.Death Valley

When the web site comes up, click on "Park home and scroll down to "Morning report"
  • I seem to recall they added some electric & water sites.

Someone here will jump in and correct the info if need be.

    From someone on RVParkReviews.com:

This is a very nice, clean National Park Campground. Not very many amenities. Clean restrooms, potable water available in places & clean dump station. Dry camping, however the campground closed Feb. 1 after we left. They are in the process of putting in 21 full hookup sites, water, electric & sewer. They are replacing the sewer lines in the park and are going to rebuild the restrooms. Even without hookups, the park was very nice. We camped here in a Motorhome
