Questions for those who've stayed at Buffalo Bill state park

We'll be stopping off at Cody for three nights on our way home from S. Dakota in early July and we're considering the reservable sites. Some reviews I've read say the wind is heavy, and there is road noise. I don't think the road noise would bother us, and the few complaints of wind were from tent campers, but we enjoy cooking, and relaxing outside the camper in the evening etc so winds could be uncomfortable. We prefer State parks etc. over private parks so this looks like a good place to stay while exploring Cody, driving the nearby scenic roads etc. Thoughts and experiences? Thanks in advance,
  • The museums in Cody are beautiful and the noon gunfight in front of Erma's restaurant was fun.
  • One time we went it was windy and the next it wasn't. Make sure you don't leave your awning out!
  • Thank you all. Wind or not I think the scenery will be worth it, so we'll do it. Beartooth HWY and dam tour are on our list as well as the museums and Old Trail Town. Hope we have time. We've been to Yellowstone three times but always coming from the west we've never made it to Cody.

Our itinerary; leave Fri afternoon. Quick overnight at Cabelas in Post Falls Id. Take off early Sat and stay at 7th ranch RV PARK near Billings seeing the Custer battlefield. Next six nights in Custer SP in Game Lodge campground sightseeing the S. Dakota attractions. Then the three nights at Buffalo Bill SP, and a leisurely two day drive home. We can't wait.

P.S. Executive, I have been following your blog for a while and enjoy it. Thanks for taking the time doing it. We can't wait for retirement!
  • We also stayed at the North Fork CG. So very nice! Absolutely loved it and plan to go back this year. If you have time while you're there, you should plan a day trip and drive the Beartooth Highway. It is spectacular.
  • Stayed there a few years back. I remember lots of wind. Don't remember road noise. Enjoy your trip.
  • We stayed at the North Fork Campground. The South Fork is closer to the road. There is no road noise at the NF. Lots of space between coaches. We were in Site 88 and would go again. Some wind in the early evening, then calm. We loved it. Be sure to take the dam tour....Dennis

  • Agree with Old Days. Beautiful scenery. Don't remember any bad wind, little wind I like anyway. Was there near end of May last year. Also had electric which didn't expect. Stayed at the one nearer Cody. If in area would stay there again.
  • I love that campground, very beautiful scenery. If you get lucky you could get a site with electric. Its close to Yellowstone also.
  • We have camped at Buffalo Bill state park three times over the years. First time was in the 80's in tents and we thought we were going to blow away. The other two times were in the MH and I recall winds heavy enough to rock the MH one time. No memory of winds the second time. Just three nights is a small sample, so others with more experience can probably provide a better idea on how often the winds are strong.

My recollection is that the winds started around sunset and blew for a couple of hours, then went calm.

There are two campgrounds there and we have always stayed at the one nearer to Cody.
