Rescue California to Coeur d'Alene Idaho

80 all the way. Nevada is not specially strict on side-of-the-road or rest area overnight parking. They even have designated truck stops/parking that a little bigger than a paved turn outs.

North on I=5 to Weed CA, US 97 north to I-84, East to US 395.
There is several free pull offs along US 97, I-84 has many areas near each of the big dams along the Columbia River.
We like free area north of I-84 at Rufus, OR

All the times we would go to Coeur d' Alene from Plumas County (before we moved there) we ended up going up through 395 to the A-3 turnoff, back onto 395 to Alturas, 199 to 39/139 to Klamath Falls then to 97 through Bend to Biggs Junction OR, I-84 to I-82 to Tri-cities back onto 395, to I-90, to CDA.
We had special gas stops for easy in and out. Stayed generally at the Likely Place RV Park, in Bend (once at the KOA in Culver OR) and Boardman Marina RV Park. Longest stint is about 5 hours.
Again, this was done for short hops to RV Parks located the right distance apart and gas stops that were easy.

I'm going to check out there various routes you guys have mentioned. The last time I went up there I drove my truck nonstop, through Vegas (from Riverside California). That was a long drive, over 1300 miles each way. That was almost ten years ago.

If you go the way ramyankee suggest there is a great little park in Standish right where A-3 comes back into 395. Bunch of full timers in it but keeps the center section (drive through) open for travelers. We stopped in planned for an overnight and spent a second. DW found a slot at the casino she fell in love with. Food there was decent too.

Making reservations was like this. "Yeah, I got room. What's you name? Please call if something comes up and you can't make it." Days End RV Park http://www.daysendrv.com/

That is a VERY nice looking little park.

We live in CDA, and travel to Sacramento a couple times a year. Maybe I can help;
I-5 to Weed Hwy 97, then North toward Bend. There is an Indian Casino North of Klamath Falls with a truck stop and parking-a Walt Haring Sno-Park about a half mile North on the town of Chemult (left off the highway and it's signed)-a Gordy's truck stop on the East side of the highway,just past the tracks North of La Pine-Peter Skene scenic viewpoint and rest stop about 9 miles North of Redmond (pretty nice place)-A Oregon state rest stop about 24 miles North of Madris- I-84, Exit 109 has great parking along the Columbia river-a rest area North of the tri cities (not very level)- a rest area on I-90 between Ritzville and Spokane.
We've traveled just about every way and this is about the best over all.
By the way, we used to live in Cameron Park way back when it had only one fire station!
