RGV Recommendation

I want to spend 7 - 10 days, at the end of March, in the RGV area and am looking for a park recommendation. Would expect that many Snowbirds will be gone by then so prefer to not make a reservation and stay flexable.
Need to do a little ceramics and leather shopping, fresh shrimp eating, and fresh orange squeezing. Don't need swimming pool, hot tub, clubhouse activities. Any suggestions?

  • Just so you know, if you use the club all they do is cut the steering wheel with a bolt cutter and slip it off. Less then 5 seconds.

You're much better off putting in a remote fuel cutoff. YMMV
  • Several stolen from Mission Bell resort last week as well. Caught a group of kids, but of course the ringleaders are free. I'd think a 16 year old kid driving a $50,000 truck into Mexico might arouse suspicion, but I guess not.
  • If I may, I'd like to make a suggestion. Before you do anything, buy yourself The Club steering wheel lock. I sure wish someone would have told me to. You see on Feb. 6th I got my F250 stolen at the Cheddars restraint in Mc Allen at noon with people everywhere. The Mc Allen PD told me that they average 2 trucks stolen everyday and said that if I had a Club, they probably would have passed right by and found an easier target. Believe me, you do not want the hassle of a stolen truck.
  • What I have on the RGV.

Can't help on the RV Park Question, but for the Shrimp part nearer to the Gulf would work best, IMHO. As for Mexico, I would agree with crossing at Progreso & walking across. Not far from Harlingen/San Benito as well. Lot of PKs in both also.

I would suggest going to the Laguna Atascosa Nat'l Wildlife Refuge out from Rio Hondo. I'd want to stay out there some as well. "Overnight camping and a boat ramp are available in the Adolph Thomae, Jr. County Park, located within the refuge near Arroyo City."

Hope some of the old post will be of help.

Not sure about visiting Mexico. I would like to visit but not mandatory. Up here in Indiana we hear a lot about violence in the border towns but also know there are many fellow RV'ers that safely winter in the Mexican interior.
Got the passports and have crossed into various border towns over the past 30 years, but not recently.

If you wish to visit a border town Nuevo Progreso Mexico is the place to go in this area. Just south of Weslaco Texas. We have made about 8 trips there this winter. Great dining, drinking & shopping. Park for $2.00 just before the bridge & walk across the river. Just a couple of blocks.

  • Red, are you wanting to do your shopping in Mexico?

    dreamer.
  • There are lots of parks here and there will be lots of vacancies. People have already started moving out. My advice would be to perhaps stay a couple days at different parks across the valley going from east to west or vice versa. Pleasant Valley at the far end of Mission is a rental park with nice large sites and has plenty of vacancies right now.
