- LaurenExplorerNorth Rim is that - no real crowds and the RV park is no hookup. Reason for no crowds compared to South Rim. If you really want to SEE the Grand Canyon in it's entire beauty you go to the South Rim.
- profdant139Explorer IIWhat about the North Rim of the Grand Canyon? Not as far as California, nice and cool, lots of great boondocking out in the Kaibab National Forest. Great mountain biking on the Rainbow Rim, good hiking. Real quiet, too. A fine place to just kick back and listen to the wind in the trees.
It's about a thousand miles from Waco, just to give you an idea of the distance. - patperry2766Explorer II"May just have to go to the Metroplex in July/Aug and let both AC's roar."
That'd be a waste. Why not look at Beavers Bend, Lake Murray or Chickasaw Nat Recreation Center. All are in in southern Oklahoma and easily a day's drive from east Texas - patperry2766Explorer IIWe enjoyed the Ridgway, Ouray & Silverton area a few years back, as well as Mueller SP. The Colorado SP facilities we have been to are leaps and bounds above anything in Texas, which is really kinda sad, but I've heard that's suppose to change in the not too distant future.
Mountaindale RV is really nice as well.
We spent about 10 days last summer at Stockade Lake South in Custer SD and it was excellent. It's one of the smaller campgrounds in the Custer State Park system, but that made for a great trip. Probably one of the most memorable that we have done. If you can handle the l-o-n-g, f-l-a-t drive across the midwest, might be something you want to consider.
Problem is that it's a hard days drive just to get out of Texas - donkeydewExplorermountaindale cabins and rv park is reasonably close and a nice park
- 5thwheeleroldmaExplorerThe crowds, the distance, bad restaurants(everything from Sysco, nothing cooked inhouse). Also have seen everything around there, dont want to repeat again.
- 4runnerguyExplorerJust curious what was it about Durango that makes it a "no go" place for you? The crowds?
- 5thwheeleroldmaExplorerThanks everyone. Our trouble is we worked in Calif when we retired 21 yrs ago and got to love the SLO and Morgan Hill areas of that state. Love the cool dry weather and all the things to do,couldn't afford to retire there, and love Texas. We went back each summer for about 14 yrs. But now we can only travel about 300 mi/day and have to rest every 2 or 3 days. That translates to about a week each way, and very tiring. I just can't get used to the lack of restaurants and things to do (not that an old F@rt does much) in the Rocky Mts. May just have to go to the Metroplex in July/Aug and let both AC's roar.
- dblrExplorerI will throw another vote out there for the New Mexico area, Red River Angel Fire and Taos, with Taos probably being the more expensive of them all.
- MWJonesExplorerX2 for South Fork
