RV ing in Northern Cascades heading East

We are looking at traveling in a fifth wheel from the Canadian border (Vancouver) through the northern Cascades in WA and East towards Yellowstone Park. Any recommendations for roads, parks, places to see?

  • Thanks to all the responses on this request. We stayed in Mt. Vernon, then across on RT 20 to Newhalem State Park...great spot. Up to Diablo lake, Washington pass...beautiful roads and scenery. Down to Carlton, watch for the detour due to road washout. Stayed on rt. 173 and the 17 to Spokane. Tourist spots for tons of photos and dam tours.
  • Another good campground is near the Park Service Visitor Center just west of Newhalem, even if you choose not to camp there the visitor center is worth your time for a rest after the long drive from Sedro-Wooley
  • Second Klipchuk. Nice USFS campground. Beautiful drive. Stop at the Ross lake overlook for a great overview.
  • Rainy Pass is about 5000 feet.
WA 20 normally have numerous eagles between Rockport and Marblemount where the highway follows the Skagit River.
Traffic is light from Newhalem over to Mazama area.
Fuel is a little scare. Refuel in Sedro Wooley or before. Next fuel is at Winthrop. There is a couple little stations along the way but gets pricy.
    Good overlook at Washington Pass.
Steep slow downgrade from Washington Pass going by Liberty Bell mountain.
Klipchuck forest service campground at the bottom of Washington on east side.
There is a nice federal campground at Colonial Creek.
Watch the weather. next month or so the weather can change in a hurry.
  • Thanks, enblethen.
Do you have any suggestions before Winthrop and what is the elevation on 20?
  • WA 20 is a good choice!
Once you get over toward Winthrop, watch for signs. WA 153 washed out after the fires. A portion of WA 20 has a marked detour. Of course this will change on short notice.
Once you get over to the Omak area, I would suggest cutting over to Electric City and take Gander at Grand Coulee Dam. Too late for laser show!
I would then meet up with US 2 and follow it to Glacier and then south on US 287 toward Yellowstone. Many different routes to choose.
