Safety in the RGV

Please forgive me for stirring the pot here. We are new snowbirds having spent a part of last year in central Fl. and presently in Fl. until late march.
We were talking about what we might do next year and the RGV is a possibility. We mentioned this to some folks that had recently left Brownsville TX. and they stated that we had better be careful down there because there is a lot of crime. I know a lot of you spend your winters there and we are not even a little bit wimpy or afraid of things. I am prudent a do research where we will be going so I wonder how much weight to give to the safety issue in the RGV. One comment this person made was that the Walmart in Brownsville now had armed guards. Thanks for your input.

Oh please...there is a brand new WalMart in Brownsville that is about the nicest I've seen in all our RV travels. I think I would take what this person says with a grain of salt. Now with that said...

Remember the RGV is many small cities one right after the other. For the most part they run west to east. IMO, a general rule of thumb is crime/lack of higher education/and low household income seems to all go hand in hand. Household income appears to go up the further east you go, and the farther away from the border(north)you get.

I always suggest somewhere around Harlingen as a good spot to begin with. It's in the middle of things in more ways then just simple location. From there you can tailor your needs, or decide the RGV is not for you.
  • After ten winters in the RGV, I feel comfortable in going back for eleven. Having said that, I realize it is as dangerous as most urban areas in the country.
