Santa Fe, NM this summer!

My son will be performing with the Santa Fe Opera this summer and we plan on taking a trip to visit him. I am looking for suggestions on campgrounds near Santa Fe and for activities, places to go, things to do while there. One thing that I must do (my wife and I are both science teachers) is find a way to drive miles out into the desert to explore. I am especially interested in old ghost towns and abandoned mines (we won't go into them!). We do have a 4WD truck.

Thanks!

Tom
  • X2 on Santa Fe Skies RV. It's a nice place. It's quiet and has fairly large sites for a RV park.
  • I stayed a night at Hyde SP and really enjoyed walking to the top of the nearby ridge; the view of Santa Fe in the valley below was great.
  • Since you are science teachers, you will probably want to go to Los Alamos. There is a museum in the town (and, IIRC it is where the original lab was located)

Check out the Galleries on Canyon Road. Take a drive up Hyde Park Road (NM-475) to the Ski Basin. When the Aspens are turning, it is a great drive. We enjoyed Pecos National Historic Park not far Northwest of Santa Fe on I-25. Drive the Turquoise Trail(NM-14) and visit the shops in Madrid where the movie "Wild Hogs" was made. A little South of Sante Fe is Tent Rocks National Monument. Other attractions in the area include Museum Hill in Santa Fe, Bandelier National Monument, Christ in the Desert Monastery, Ghost Ranch, and Chaco Cultural Historical Park,
  • For ghosttowns, do visit ghosttowns.com. There are dozens and dozens of them.

Northern New Mexico is well known for its mountains. Much of it is at fairly high elevation. SF, for instance, is over 7k feet. I live at 8,400 ft. not far from Taos.

There are many, many cultural attractions that you may enjoy (in addition to the many museums and galleries at SF, Taos and Albuquerque). Check out the many current Pueblo reservations in the area as well as the far older remains left by the Ancestral Pueblans (the Anasazi) at Bandelier and especially at Chaco Canyon.

That should keep you busy enough -- though there is much, much more!

One thing I would want to do was go to the FOUR CORNERS area not too far from there where they have the round monument and at least get a picture of me with my hands and feet in different states... That would be CO-UT-NM-AZ I reckon...

Ive made the I40 trip across that part of the country many times but only once have I gone up to Santa Fe. I'm always blown away by the desert country. When we lived in the Phoenix Area we used to drive up to Flagstaff AZ area at the WUPATKI Indian Ruins area and in the early evenings with the setting Sun we could see the purple and violet hues start taking BIG effect coming from the Painted Desert to the East. Beautiful site to see and behold...

  • That sounds like a great trip! We stayed a couple of nights in Santa Fe last summer on a big road trip. We stayed at the Santa Fe KOA and had a pleasant stay. The sites aren't huge, but the people were nice. I wrote a review here: KOA

We enjoyed walking around the old part of town, and we took a drive up the mountains, which was pretty and offered a completely different landscape. Here's a post about what we enjoyed: Seeing Santa Fe

We didn't have much time to explore, unfortunately.
