September in Washington (North Cascades & Olympics)

We spent September camping and hiking in the North Cascades and the Olympics, almost all of it dry camping in National Forest and National Park campgrounds. (We did get some rain, but it still counts as dry camping -- no hookups.)

Here are the links to the three blog posts covering this trip -- if you have a few minutes, please feel free to browse through them. (The trip report is just too long to post here -- so I have made it available on the blog -- sorry for any inconvenience.)

Part I: North Cascades

Part II: Mt. Baker area

Part III: the Olympics and the rain forests

And here are a couple of sample pictures -- this is Mt. Shuksan at sunset:

And this is the Hoh River:

  • Wow! I was raised in the Olympics but left in 1955 for the service. Wife and I did the summer of 2013 up there and I planned to spend a few weeks in the north cascades, but highway 20 was closed for a several weeks due to a slide. That took us farther south and to the Olympics. I hope to break out of our Colorado routine next year and get back up there for late summer/fall. Thanks for all the great photos and memories of hikes and camping I enjoyed in the Olympics, back when one could be there for days and see no other person. bill

Agreed....it's windy, gray, rainy, and downright miserable. My lawn is full of moss and mushrooms and we haven't seen the sun in weeks.

    Yep .... sounds about right.

Our BIL lives right on a small bay aways outside of Poulsbo on the Olympic Peninsula and we visit them a lot. Kindof decent during their summers, but not so the other times of the year if you like some sun and low enough humidity to dry out equipment, comfortably do outside work, paint, grow vegetable gardens, etc.. :(
  • Beautiful pictures!! MY favorite place on earth. The Olympic Park Hurricane Ridge, etc. Beautiful time of year too :)
  • we moved from Western WA to eastern because of the rain and clouds. ALL YEAR LONG except for September pretty much ;) ;) ;) hehe
