Sequoia and Kings Canyon campground recomaditions

We are planing a trip out west in 2017. Should be in Sequoia and Kings Canyon NP in late June 2017. Hoping to get our reservations all set up. We will be pulling our 21' camper and our kids and grandkids will be following with their tent. Total of 6 people. Looking for recomaditions on which campgrounds inside the NP to get reservations in.
All comments appreciated.
  • On second thought, Lodgepole can be pretty nice, especially in the winter -- this shot was taken in November:

(Note to self -- when "snow flurries" are predicted, retract the awning fully before the storm hits.)
  • check out Hume Lake campground. fishing swimming fun
can rent canoe, has a lot. we will be there thru the 12th
  • Dorst Creek accepts reservations, and has loops that don't allow generators, a big plus for us. It's not as crazy as Lodgepole. Closer to Hume Lake as well. We usually book site 105.
  • Thanks for the comments. In looking at Lodgepole it looks like there are a lot of amenities in the area. Showers and laundry could be nice. And reservable too.
  • Look at a map - although the parks are contiguous, the road is not - you basically go out one, back into the other, and it is a fairly long drive. You might want to split up your time and stay in both camps.

That said - we have been to Sequoia twice, both off season, both times at Lodgepole. Now you would think if you go off season, you will be able to get a great site, right? Nope because they close off so many loops there are not enough spaces. I haven't been in about 8 years so maybe they are doing better...
  • Check out Lodgepole campground in Sequoia N.P. It is located close to a lot of stuff and has the Kings river nearby.
  • I would recommend either Dorst or Azalea -- large sites in both places. Don't try to come up through Three Rivers -- come in through the north. Dorst is more centrally located. Great hike to Muir Grove leaves right from the campground.

I would avoid Lodgepole with that big of a group -- too tight. If Dorst is booked up, maybe try Stony Creek, nearby.
  • When we went to Kings Canyon we always stayed down in the canyon, I think there are four campgrounds in that area all following the river. I don't think any on them have reservations, all first come first serve. As long as it is not a holiday weekend I don't think you would have any problems.

It is a bit of a drive down into the canyon and slow going but not a problem for your trailer.

Check with the website I do know the Sequoia's have at least on campground you can make reservations. Believe area.

Also note that there are restrictions on your length going in from the south.
