And there is nothing new in this..it has been mentioned before in this thread. And..what is a hippie, anyway? Some dudes in their RV parked in the desert? Those folks from Columbus, Ohio? or Seattle, Washington? Or maybe from Martha's Vineyard? Those folks are hippies? or do you mean the Vets that live out there? You call them hippies some of them will show you just what the hurting end of a...well, you get my drift. But yes..there are some pretty free spirits out there, Thank God. They fly the Stars and Stripes from their homes, there are a bunch that can fix most anything, can design some pretty cool gear and if you were to call THEM hippies, they'd be okay with that.

Illegals? Or do you mean the Vets? The old people? The kids? The artists? The engineers? The Seals have a resting place in there...you mean those illegals? Or were you referring to the hundreds of RVrs that roll into and thru the Slabs between now and March of next year?

LOL...I think he was referring to his ancestors who came to this country themselves as illegals. Generations ago there were NO visas to get, no paperwork to be submitted you paid your fare and got on a boat. You arrived at one of the ports in America and all you did was answer a few questions and if you had a few bucks in your pocket you were in. How soon we forget that virtually all of us are decendants of essentially "illegal" immigration. Immigration rules only got started as a result of the Asian influx during the Gold Rush and the building of the railroads and it was all aimed at "Asiatics".

For those that need to know..there is now free water on the Slabs. They are asking that people limit themselves to two gallons per day per person.



So no..this is not for the RV crowd. They'll have to drive into Brawley.

People who disagree with something and want it to go away, will always sensationalize it, with out thinking through all the ramifications

My mea culpa..I have been on the Slabs. Lived there for 5 weeks. Have friends that are there, so..I know that I am not impartial. But..golly, I love a good but...There are only maybe 50 people that live there all year 'round. And many of them find alternatives when the temps are peaking. I digress..most of the residents are on some type of monthly income. State or federal. Many vets out there...try and tell them they haven't paid...and all of that 'income' goes right back into the local economies. Groceries, fuel, tobacco.

The rest of the inhabitants are transients. So many in RV's..hundreds of them at a time. Thousands over the course of a winter. Let us consider the might of the RV dollar. If none of those transients came thru Brawley, Calieinte or Niland..those places would be destitute...more than they already are. The people that live on the Slabs pay. They pay dearly. The store, restaurant and fuel stops in Niland survive due to the monies spent by people from the Slabs.

Yep..the Fire Dept and ambulance do have to get out there every so often. And really? How big of a deal is that? The police, local and feds are out patrolling anyway..it's what they do. It's not going to cost less if they don't cruise the Slabs and if we are talking enforcement..well, stats are everything when it comes to budget time. The cops and fire want to be out there, if for nothing else, than the numbers.

Because generally speaking the full timers are not going to be there long enough to freeload on the public services such as the Police and the Fire Department like the people living at the slabs do.

So what is the difference (in your words) of a full timer freeloading multiple locations adding up in time and a person at the Slabs staying put for the same amount of time? Both depend on public services should they be needed, don't pay Property Taxes or State Income Taxes. Respectfully still just trying to understand the difference!

Latest word is if you spend $15.00 you can join the Chamber of Commerce and then get water at the CofC where the swap meet is. Sounds screwy to me but that's the plan. Niland business will fall off. Buckshot restaurant has cut hours back on Sunday and Monday. They will still do business with truckers and the gas station on Ca 111 will do some business. Guess we have to wait and see how this plays out.

Personally, If I were living or having an extended stay at the site I would not have a problem with paying $15 a year for the water use.

We all pay for water in some way, shape, or form.
