Yeah. It's going to be hot. That part of the mountains is no cooler than the flatlands. We avoid the area in the summer.

Thats what I was worried about. I dry camp a lot in the spring and fall. Not a problem. Open some windows and turn on the fan. I didn't know how much cooler that area would be this time of year. I might just have to wait until later on in the fall or early winter.

You live in Concord. Go outside. It will be the same there. IF the Cherokee area is your only option. Wait until late Sept at least.
However. IF you want to go dry camping, and want to be in the cool. Try Julian Price, outside of Blowing Rock, or Linville Falls, on the BRP. Both are always cool. AC is not needed, Even on the hottest days down here. Average highs in the 70s

Terry someone in another thread a while back was looki to escape the heat around Charlotte cof course you and I are usually a couplevdegrees cooler than they are, I noticed that up at Stone Mountain State Park on Roaring Gap, that they are about 10 degrees cooler than Charlotte and according to weather dot com, today they are about 12 degrees cooler. So I imagine the rhododendron and moss covered Julian price will be even a tad bit cooler itself. We hope to make it up that way in August or September.

Smokemont runs about 10 degrees cooler than the lowlands. If it's 90 in your area, it'll be about 80 at Smokemont. No hookups and the route there has a rather low underpass clearance. I second the idea of checking with the rangers or calling the managers of Smokemont which is run by Cherokee.

Smokemont is very wooded but a Class A will go through the roads if you can find a spot to camp. Most this time of year are reserved. If you are coming from Charlot area there is no underpass to worry about.

The temperature will be warm but cool at night. It is a very doable event. There have been rain showers almost everyday which cools things down. Gens can run from 8am until 8pm that should cool any class A down.

The campground is not managed by the Cherokee's as it is in the Natl Park. They do have a private contractor that does manage some of the camping area's.

If you can get two spots I say go for it.

We are going up this weekend. Not camping though. Plan on going to JP in Aug camping. In 30 years of camping at JP, and Linville. We have yet to need AC. Or Raccoon Holler either for that matter. But the times we went to Cherokee. AC was a must. It's just hotter there. So we don't go in the summer any more.

BTW. The high today in Cherokee was 88. The high here was 88 as well. So not a lot of difference. It's 82, and cloudy there now. Forecasted lows are virtually the same. 67, there, and 68 here.
Again. The temps there are the same as the temps here. Not the kind of dry camping I want to do.

On a brighter note. It's 76, and lows in the low 60s tonite Supposed to be in the 50s in Blowing Rock tomorrow nite.
