Stealth camping

Len, yes..there are many stories of abuses. Yes, the 'illegals' work harder than most anyone. And yes, you are free to have your views. On the issue of people claiming to be vets and not...you know that many are, right? and are scared of you when you make demands on them. Or they are in whatever head space they are in...and you come along and demand answers. I dunno man...but is it really your business to do that?

I am not going to get on my rant box...no point in it. Most on RV.Net will support your view point. Time and events have a funny way of bringing people to see things differently.

Sorry, Gary, I'm not buying it. I lived in Los Angeles for 35 years including 9 in Hollywood. I ALWAYS challenged homeless "Vietnam Vet" about what unit they were in or where they went to Basic. Simple stuff any vet could answer. Not ONCE in 35 years did I get a factual, BTDT, answer.

My sister saw a "homeless" guy in (I believe) El Paso when she lived there. She went to some fast food place and bought him a burger. She gave it to him then went around the block and parked. When he walked away, she drove by where he was sitting. The burger was still there.

I have no sympathy whatsoever for the so called "homeless". They are either frauds, druggies, alcoholics, or mentally ill. And the latter were released from institutions in the '70s by "compassionate" liberals because of movies like "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" and "Bill".

In L.A., down the street from the beggars, illegal aliens were selling oranges and peanuts. I'd trade every beggar for those illegals. I've never seen an illegal begging!

I don't know about stealth camping ... but when we go on RV trips we sure could use commercial campgrounds with dirt/grass/scrub special drycamping sections where you could overnight in your RV - with no use of their bathrooms/showers/etc. facilities allowed - for around $10 per night. I rarely see a commercial campground without some unkept part of it that they couldn't make a few bucks off us (cheap) $10/per night self-contained RV overnighters. They could even enforce a one night, or two consecutive night, rule to keep squatters out. :C

I can see the need to stealth camp. For example, we used to have rest stops in the '70s. They are long gone, but the need is there. WMs are not a 100% solution, so it is understandable to park nearer a destination.

My only criticism is trying to stealth camp near any type of school. With all the fear about predators, it is the last place one would want to be near when overnighting. In my neck of the woods, any vehicle near a school that doesn't look like a soccer mom-mobile will get the police or sheriff called on it in seconds flat, especially with out of state plates, and definitely at night.

Come clean now .... admit that it's pretty challenging to "stealth" camp in a white colored Class C that's four wheel drive so it's high up in the air and sometimes might even have a boat way up on top. ;)

I spent most of my adult life one paycheck from being without and now that I am retired and with a pension, the need to be frugal has diminished, but it is from habit that I still seek out the free spots. It is all part of the days games. I still seldom eat out, shop wisely and only drink good wine, good bourbon and good coffee. Life is to short to go cheap on those things.

What/who are folks hiding from and WHY?

The LAW, society or just being CHEAP

yeah..okay jfkmk. I have to come clean...I do it the same way because I am cheap. I camp free all over the place and I always feel I have failed if I end up anyplace other than with a great view, quiet and wifi.

Also..I am a bleeding heart, left leaning Liberal, so the sight of the homeless just breaks my heart. I try to remind myself everyday, how grateful I am and how lucky. I spent most of my adult life one paycheck from being without and now that I am retired and with a pension, the need to be frugal has diminished, but it is from habit that I still seek out the free spots. It is all part of the days games. I still seldom eat out, shop wisely and only drink good wine, good bourbon and good coffee. Life is to short to go cheap on those things.
