Texas Beaches

Hi Folks,

Late, but deciding on whether to go to a national park or the beach in August. Never been to Texas beaches. Any suggestions? Live in Tucson, so Corpus is the closest.

Texas with its barrier Islands that run for almost all of the East Gulf Coast should have plenty of beach places camp sites...

I think the PADRE Islands only have road traffic on the upper portion of it...

Use GOOGLE MAPS and run up and down the Gulf side and search for RV Camp grounds... We use this tool all the time looking for different camp ground when traveling...

  • Little less touristy but we go to Bolivar Peninsula every year. You can take the ferry back and forth to Galveston. Bolivar was almost completely wiped out by Hurricane Ike so most places down there are brand new.
  • South Padre, Corpus Christi, Galveston, they all have nice beaches with many nice RV parks. In South Padre we stayed at the KOA. In Corpus we stayed on Mustang Island at Gulf Waters Beach Front park where each space is privately owned.
  • It's going to be very hot in August, but being from AZ it should not bother you too much except for the humidity. Mustang island up to Port Aransas has good beaches and several nice RV Parks. There is even a county park right at the jetty in Port A.
  • The waters around the Bolivar Peninsula are not pristine with the entrance to the port of Houston right there. The water was not something I wanted to even stick my toes into. VERY dirty. We stayed at the Bolivar RV park and while we enjoyed it don't expect to have any trees for shade and be prepared for ants.
  • Thanks folks, I'd love to go back to the outer banks or Myrtle Beach, but living out west, I'm not up for such a long drive for a beach vacation. I want to go to Mexico, but my wife is nervous - we both know many many people who do it, but ...

  • If you are considering Mexico, try to pair up with a few folks heading that way. If you advertise it in FB or other groups, you may just find someone. It's not uncommon for small caravans to do this. Doesn't mean you have to stay together all the time either. Just sayin.

X2 We have friends that go to Rocky Point and we're considering going there at the same time.

Another friend points out that Rocky Point is considered a "safe area" and kept that way for the tourists. He says the crime rate is significantly less than most larger American cities. Certainly that is true of Phoenix where most of the local news involves crime.
