texas coast parks

next year we are planning a trip down the texas coast, and wondered about campgrounds on the gulf. we like to surf fish and ride our bicycles. we've never been down the texas side of the gulf and would appreciate any recommendations.
  • Bolivar Peninsula just East of Houston Allows camping on the beach.
Look at Crystal Beach and High Island.
There is a thread on camping Crystal beach
  • I would try Pioneer RV Park on Mustang Island, just south of Port Aransas or Mustang Island State Park, just south of Pioneer. It's a short walk to the beach and surf fishing. Just a tip: the salt water fishing license will cost you about $65.00, but if you do your surf fishing within the boundaries of the State Park, you don't need a license. You will, however, need a state park pass for about the same amount, but if you use the Texas State Park campgrounds, you may find that a more economical way to go.
  • thanks everyone, I will write these down and research them. we are looking forward to it. we will buy the park pass for 65.00 as we kind of plan on staying in state parks while there. we will pprobably be looking for hookups about every three or four days so we can dump our tanks.

Matagorda has FHU. Really nice park with the Colorado River behind some of the campsites & Gulf of Mexico within walking distance from the the campground. It is ran by the LCRA (not a state park).

  • Sea Rim SP, no hookups or dump station but I guarantee it'll be the least crowded of any beach park in TX. Galveston SP is OK, hookups and dump, but not exactely on the beach. National Seashore at Padre Island is real cheap (like $5 for 30 days) but it is real hard core beach camping, haven't been there in several years price may have changed.
