  • Or 117 miles west we stayed at BALMORHEA STATE PARK

  • Thanks everyone for the replies, sounds like we will stay at Walmart, we are headed west to Arizona. Thanks again,John R.
  • It is hard finding a campsite in our area. Monahans is a fairly nice state park. You best call any of them before getting here.

  • I would second the suggestion of the Monahans Sandhills SP. just guessing that you are heading South or Southwest so this might be another option but certainly farther North and may not be on your route - Palo Duro Canyon which is closer to Amarillo.

There are quite a few private RV parks along the way but many of them are currently full of people full timing for work in the oil fields. This tends to make things b not so nice so if you are thinking about them just be open minded and look them over.

I recently drove from Midland/Odessa to Dallas and save several prks which looked pretty nice from the highway and might be worth looking at.

Hope this helps. Have a safe trip.

  • Hi
I live in Abilene,Tx and just wanted to say you may have a very hard time finding a campsite in the Midland-Odessa area due to the oil field boom that is going on in that area now. Hotel rooms are going for $300.00 per night and up. If you can make Big Springs or Abilene you will have a better chance. Might add if you are going south out of Odessa toward San Angelo its no better.
    Good luck

  • Never have stayed there, but I believe I would try for Monahans Sandhills State Park, just off the I-20 near Monahans. About 36 miles westbound from Odessa.

One may also overnight at Texas RestAreas.

There is a turn out Exit 142 near Midland.

There is a rest area Exit 69 near Pyote. We spent one night at one years ago, I believe it was the one at Exit 191 near Coahoma. It is well before Odessa/Midland as well as Big Spring. The is a turn out near Big Spring at Exit 168.

There is also one off I-10 eastbound of Van Horn at Exit 144.

    Odessa has two Walmarts:

Midland has one just off the interstate.

    Walmart Supercenter
    200 West Interstate 20, Midland 432-684-3910

    Pecos has one as well.
