Lots of good tips! Some responses:
Definitely no fire ring -- we don't make fires out West (too risky), and we haven't gone back East yet.
We always scout the terrain with the truck prior to towing in. And we get out and inspect the site on foot, carefully, before committing. Our trailer is modified for slow and careful off-pavement towing, and we have been in some really rough sites (huge rocks, big holes, not level, etc.).
The area we are looking at is not too far east of the Tetons, for the eclipse on August 21. That is as specific as I can be right now.
And we always drive slowly and carefully -- I have never had my wheels spin out, never slid on a turn, no skidding (and no kidding). But no matter how I "tiptoe," my big bumpy All Terrain tires leave quite a mark, except on rock, and especially with low-speed hard turns of the wheel, which are always necessary when situating the trailer within the campsite.
It just kills me to mess up previously-undisturbed soil. No way would I ever mow down anything but grass. On the other hand, when I occupy a previously-occupied site, somebody once was the first to use that site, so I guess I could be that somebody, once in a blue moon (or a black moon, since it is a solar eclipse).
I will triple-check with the rangers responsible for that district.
