Dan, I really wouldn't worry about it. I don't know where you are looking at, but I grew up in the Great Plains and the vegetation is very hardy. Also, I don't plan on looking for a spot for the eclipse until, roughly, the week before. I want to see what the weather is going to be before deciding where to go. Also, it's a mid-day event so I don't need to be at my campsite to view it; I can move to a better site or a Walmart parking lot after. I've done this before. Just not in the USA. ;)
Hint if you haven't done this before: Don't waste time photographing it! Experience it with your M1A1 issue eyeballs and brain. There will be millions of photos and videos online that you can download later, but nothing will even come close to what you actually witness. During the partial phases you can spread your fingers and get pinhole images of the the event to photograph on the ground or a piece of paper. Tree leaves will produce the same effect. And be aware of what the creatures around you are doing. The rapid approach of nighttime effects their behavior greatly. The air can cool quickly so be prepared for that if the day is cool.
Be flexible! You are dealing with Nature here. ;)
