The Steps in AZ closed

One of the places that we “dry camp” when in AZ is called “The Steps” located on the east side of AZ Hwy 95 south of Lake Havasu City and about 2-3 miles north of the Bill Williams N.W.R.

A friend that is already in the area says that the state of AZ has closed the steps to camping except by permit only! The 14 day permit costs $20 and is available from Phoenix in person or by mail. However when he went by the steps the other day there was nobody camping there!

Does anybody have additional information about this?
Thanks for your input
  • $20 for 14 nights sounds affordable, even if obtaining the permit is a bit of a hassle.
  • You might try contacting the BLM Lake Havasu Field Office. If it is not their land, they might know whom to contact.

  • Though I don't know for sure as the AZ state land web site isn't real clear on where the "Steps" are in relation to their map, I bet the "Steps" are located on Arizona Land Trust grounds.

There is a yearly recreation pass that covers all AZ state trust land for an individual it's 15$, and $20 for a family. There are time in location limits, or least there used to be. There is a lot of state land available for those looking to get away from it all on the cheap if you are willing to do some research.
