I'm still baffled by a top price of $30-40 and then look for a hotel. I prefer a campground unless I'm in a city or on business travel. And, I must be awful at finding these nice $50 hotels because I've traveled to 45 states and haven't found them with any consistency. I've found deals, but not regularly $50 rooms that are clean.
I also understand the pet fee and I'm a dog owner. Dog pee kills grass and lots of dogs obviously taxes the campground. I do get frustrated at extra person charges for over two people whether the base rate was $30 or $60. Here's where I say hotels don't charge extra for kids and neither should a campground, at least for a family of 4 or 5.
Last point, the price of electricity is going up and that must be factored in. I was glad to get away from CA electricity rates only to arrive in RI as the local company raised rates 35% to near or past CA rates.
