I'm still baffled by a top price of $30-40 and then look for a hotel. I prefer a campground unless I'm in a city or on business travel. And, I must be awful at finding these nice $50 hotels because I've traveled to 45 states and haven't found them with any consistency. I've found deals, but not regularly $50 rooms that are clean.
Tripadvisor allows you to sort by price, and their reviews tell you if the place is clean, safe, quiet, etc.
Generally, small cities and towns are cheaper than big cities. Exceptions abound.
If you are comparing to a campground, how clean do you really need a motel to be? :B
