Where to go for 1 month? East coast

There is plenty to see and do in the Hampton Roads Area as others have mentioned. You might look at Newport News Park Campground. Max stay is 21 days and it is about $35 per night. I have not stayed there, but others say it is an okay place to stay. American Heritage is really nice, not cheap though. They may have a monthly rate, if you are interested you could call them.

Take a week or so to work your way down from VA to Wilmington along the NC coast.

Double ditto. West of Richmond is Lexington, VA with the tomb of Robert E Lee at Washington & Lee University.

Next door to W&L is Virginia Military Institute with its museum and traditions. There are Civil War cannon balls embedded in the outer walls of the dorms. VMI is known as the West Point of the South. Tons of history in Lexington. One of our favorite spots and we still haven't explored it all.

Some other historical sites to ponder.

In Norfolk, you have a number of historical sites, including the Douglas MacArthur Memorial. This is the final resting place for MacArthur and his wife, along with all his decorations, papers, and other historical notes.

You also have Nauticus, which is located on the Elizabeth River. It is an "interactive science & technology center that explores the naval, economic & nautical power of the sea". It includes the battleship USS Wisconsin BB64.

You may also be able to do tours of ships at the US Naval Base. Before 9-11, it was very easy to tour a ship. The Navy usually had 2 or 3 ships available on weekends for tours. Since 9-11 I don't know if the Navy does this, and even if they do, I suspect there are a lot of hoops to jump through before getting on base.

A little further down is Virginia Beach.

On the Williamsburg side of Hampton Roads, you can go to the Mariners Museum and Park in the City of Newport News. It is as suggested, a museum for all things maritime. It includes artifacts from the USS Monitor of Civil War fame.

In the City of Hampton also on the north side of Hampton Roads is Fort Monroe. The US Army runs the Casemate Museum of Ft Monroe.

American Heritage Campground is the one to stay at.

I would go to Myrtle Beach for that length of time, that time of year. More to do than on the Outer Banks, less expensive maybe than Williamsburg for a month. But there are also places like Virginia Beach,

When I lived and worked in Myrtle Beach, the three southeast counties of NC were in my work area, Wilmington, Fort Fisher and the southern NC beaches were a day trip, sometimes several days a week. We would drive to Wilmington for shopping (MB being a little empty place 45 years ago).

Do you play golf? Myrtle Beach or the pinehills area of NC, between Fayetteville and the SE coast.

Thanks everyone for the great advice. After looking at the great links you provided and talking about where to go we kinda think a trip from KY over to Virginia will be our direction. Ther is so much we haven't seen there. We just returned from a mountain trip and we have seen th NC mountain region it was great, but now for some historical stuff. :-).

I'm going to make some calls this week to see if I can get a monthly rate from somewhere. If not, we may have to go with our passport america and try several parks to keep cost down. We didn't want to jump parks that often, but oh well. We can't do 30 nights at $40 to $50+ per night.

Any suggestions please keep them coming, they are greatly appreciated.

I think you will find plenty to do in the Williamsburg area. We were there a few years ago and really loved it. Virginia is a great state for history and rving. Enjoy!
