Air horn compressor tank mod

Hi all. Just joined the form. Looks like a nice place to get ideas and trade information.
Anyway, I need some feedback about using the compressor tank for the air horns. I have Hadly air horns and I realized that I have this air tank and compressor that does nothing but provide air for the horns that I rarely, if ever, use. I added a valve and ran a hose from the tank to a quick connect fitting I installed in a side compartment. I can now use this air to top off my tires.
My question is this ok to do? Any drawback to doing this. It just seemed like an obvious modification that should have been done from the manufacture. Maybe I'm missing something? What do you guys think?

Many of us have one of the various 12vdc compressors from "Q industries"

Modified with standard asme quick connect air fittings
    And 50ft of air hose

Yes I also carry a small compressor. But now I dont even need to drag it out now than I'm using the air horn 135 psi tank and compressor that was just sitting there doing nothing. Now at least it will get some use.

Based on the Hadly kits the compressor is designed for limited use, with a small tank.
I have a PacBrake system and currently 1.5 gals of air tank capacity, and compressor rated to 150 psi. it still takes several minutes to raise the pressure of my 265/75-16E tires from 50 psi to 70 psi.

  • I helped a friend with air horns on his boat. The tank and the size of the lines are key. His air horns dumped a lot of air real fast which was okay as their use was intermittent. They got attention on the water!

Depends on the duty cycle of the compressor compared to how you use it. The Tech Sheet for the Hadley 850/851 compressor has this spec: "Maximum cycle time 7 minutes with 30 minute cool down." If you have this compressor and can get your work done in 7 minutes, you should be good to go.

If you have a different compressor, research the duty cycle spec on it.

Thank you for that. Yes, It is a tiny little compressor and it does get hot. I wouldn't use it to inflate a flat tire or fill an air mattress. Just for topping off tires. Seems to work good.
