We do similar camping. We have 2 GC's and a PD 9260 converter mounted in the compartment next to the battery. Converter to battery cables are automotive battery cables. We have 220 watts of solar, and a Honda 2K gen.
If your converter is not next to the battery bank, size your wiring from converter to battery for less than .2 Volts at the current the converter you are going to get. Keeping the voltage drop down to that might require some big wire. I mounted the converter in a compartment next to the battery, and ran 115 line from the circuit breaker panel to the converter. With the converter mounted correctly, I don't think a separate charger is any better.
The heater can be your biggest user. Digital stat can cut down usage a little, down comforter and turning stat down are the trick. Your other plans sound like you're on the right track.
I'd certainly recommend solar; we very seldom have to use the gen (unusually cold weather using heater and no sun for awhile)
Good Luck,
Doug
