Can I put my own sofa in a fifth wheel?

Hi -

In the interest of having "all the comforts of home" we were wondering how permanently furniture was attached in 5th Wheels. I'm specifically thinking of the sofas. We haven't done a lot of shopping - we're certainly not done - but in every rig we've seen I don't find any of the sofas comfortable.

I know things can be customized at the factory but we're set on buying used. Can we toss out the existing sofa and bring in our own double recliner love seat?

Thanks in advance for any information and advice you can provide.
  • If you are pulling a fifth wheel or TT and have 48X40 rear window you can pull the window and remove and install new high quality furniture from a home furnishing store. You will of course need some strong bodies to help lift the goods for removal and installation. The window is removed and reinstalled with little effort. No need taking the chance damaging your wood work and coach entrance plus you can buy high quality furniture for the same price you would pay for the low to middle quality that is avalible in the KD(knock down) Rv furniture lines. I did this years ago, found Ralph Lauren chairs and sleeper sofa at 60% off, still looks and sets like it did on day one.
Dont forget to recaulk the window after reinstalling.
  • We replaced our recliners with theater seating. When purchasing the seating I insured the size was correct & the center console could be separated from the right & left recliner. It easily fit through the RV door, 1 piece at a time with backs reclined. Thanks to bro-in-law's help, lifting & reassembly was easy. Good luck.
  • Most recliners made for the last 5 years the backs will come off. The backs are usually slid down onto a mounting rail/bracket. You will have to find the release catch to get the back off. Probably a catch on each side. You may also have to unstaple the back dust skirt if it is wrapped around the bottom. It may be velcroed which would make it easier. Once you find the release catches and free the skirt, you might have to also pry a little. I used a short 2x2 to gentle free the back of my last recliner, as it hand friction lock on the metal rails.

There is one more thing to consider. Is your love seat recliners wall huggers? If not, will they ride in a position with them set out or will you have pull them out and push them in when setting up and tearing down?
  • While in "may" be possible it really depends on how the RV is built and if the existing built in furniture is "hiding" stuff like wiring, water lines, furnace duct work or in some cases the wheel wells.

Often times built in furniture is built in for a reason and you will need to assess what is behind or under it.

Once you determine nothing is hidden under it then you will need to really make some good measurements of the door opening, if there is and "bends" that the new furniture will have to make or any other obstructions along the way.

Only then can you make a determination if it is possible to change.

One thing you will find though is home furniture tends to be deeper and taller than typical RV furniture. This makes things much more difficult to turn sideways to get it in the door.
  • Thanks all for the great and lightning fast responses. That concern has been put to rest once and for all.

  • Most all home furniture will work and fit fine most of the time. Big thing is the make sure your slide outs will move without hitting. Real Lazy Boy recliners are so much nicer and lighter than RV recliners in most cases as you pick a chair that fits you. The only original furniture in my rig is the kitchen table and chairs. All living furniture has been changed out. Randu
  • Your only limitations would be if you can get the new through the door and the old out. Some lazy boys have removable backs which can make the job easier.

As long as you get the old one out and the new one in thru the door!
  • As long as it fits, or you can make it fit. And btw, welcome to the forum!
