Dinette & jack knife sofa covers

Has anyone purchjased replacement slip covers? We're looking for something that fits nicely, not one of the one size fits all covers. I found www.slipcovershop.com when I searched, but didn't find much else on the forums.

We also have a sewing machine (the kids xmas present last year), but nobody in the house has the skills to make it. If we can't find something this may be our first sewing project.

Any leads on a supplier or tips for making replacements would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'd like to try making one, but my last sewing attempt didn't go well (my wife literally had to stop me as I went to throw the machine because the thread kept breaking). I typically don't shy away from trying new things, but me & finess don't typically go together.

I was watching this video and it seems simple enough, but I'm sure it's not. This might be a project I talk my wife into since she has patience.

If you have a decent QUALITY sewing machine (we have a PFAFF and it makes that machine really work) you should be able to sew upholstery.. A few requirements however is having the correct thread (upholstery thread is thicker and heavier than standard thread), correct needle and correct tension settings.

Thread size and setting up the correct tension is really key to success and will require a few practice runs on some similar thickness scrap materials before committing to the actual material you are planning to use.

We have often found decent deals on upholstery material at JoAnn fabric stores in the scrap bins so you can practice without breaking the bank..
  • Thanks for the tips. My wife is looking for a project to help get the trailer ready, so this may be on her (I hope).

Get your self some of this type of upholstery thread. I wouldn't use a welt like the video shows, that is just adding another complexity into the project. If you use a heavy upholstery material, you won't need any welts.

I bought the material for my cushions at the same upholstery supplier. They had a few bolts of material on clearance, it was around $5/yd.

  • You will be many $$$$$ ahead by sewing your own. I got lucky, my BIL is an upholsterer and he whacked mine out in a day. You may also wish to get new foam, I bought all my materials at an upholstery supplier---Rochford Supply
