Flooring Regrets .... Any ?

Well the carpet ... YUCK !!!

So that came out. Then we found a roof leak so the wall repairs and such have taken us now to where we are ready to consider flooring options.

We live in the desert mostly. We also drive our coach around. We stay at 40* or less so we do not "do" cold weather. We have cats (I know).

What have you installed and hated?

What have you installed and loved?

What have you installed that can be cleaned easily?

Carpet is not going back in due to the sand issue.

I'm ready to learn ....

  • Allure planks with glue strips were very easy to install and keep clean. However, we do have end seams that have separated (up to 1/8") in places. Very slick when only wearing socks.
  • We replaced the carpet with sheet vinyl in our last motorhome. It was easy to keep clean. We liked it so much, we put some in our house. Our new motorhome came with sheet vinyl.

No carpet if you have pets....Hard woods or linoleum.

I still like the warmth of carpet, just need as good vacuum.
  • I replaced the original carpet in my 93 Dutchmen A with an Allure look a like from Lowe's and it went down easy and looked great until the weather turned cold and the expansion and contraction had it either separating at the click lock seams or buckling up. This spring I am going to take the 2 year old vynl planking out and replace it with Mannington sheet flooring. Jeff
  • allure vinyl plank flooring with the grip strip (not the click lock style) is the easiest. I've rehabbed around 200 trailers. Just be sure to lay the foam underlayment first which helps not only with sound deadening but makes it soft underfoot. Just staplegun the underlayment directly down over the old floor (unless it's carpet of course). If you don't use underlayment the seams could separate in very cold weather. Most colors are around $2 a square foot. Only sold at home depot. I don't even use shoe molding anymore because I can cut under doorjambs and cabinets etc using an electric jamb saw. Rent one and make life easier.
  • We had carpet thought out our last 5th wheel, was a bugger to keep clean, in the new trailer we only have carpet in bedroom, love it. We have vinyl flooring in the rest of the trailer an has cut down the 5th wheel cleaning by 2/3rds Yahooooooo ....
  • With the sand issue, you definitely want to avoid cracks and grooves. I would go with a good quality sheet vinyl. Look for a matte finish so any scratches from cats and/or sand will be inconspicuous. No tile, laminate, prefinished hardwood, or vinyl tiles to catch sand.

I recently put Mannington sheet vinyl in my kitchen/dining room at home. I got the "Platinum" quality level, the highest, which is thick, resilient, easy to clean, and pleasant to walk on.
  • One of the things we really liked about our TT was that it only had carpet in the bedroom. That has worked out great for us.
At the RV show this year I noticed that vinyl flooring is much more popular.
And it looks better than ever too.
