Ideas for a adding main battery shutoff

I'm looking for ideas on how to add a master battery shutoff / disconnect. I'm looking for something childproof, weatherproof, etc. my fuse panel doesn't seem to have any main fuses and I get aggravated pulling all of them or opening up the battery box every time I want to disconnect for more than three weeks of storage.

This is for the camper in my sig with dual 12V batteries. Thanks!

    Hi,

My RV came OEM with the perko keyed switch that Roy shows.

I believe they are $5.95 at Napa. Continuous duty 100 amps, contacting 1000 amps.

OK I put one of those on. It does NOT work. Actually it worked for avery short time, and then, I thought my battery was dead, as when I turned on the key, and looked at the battery monitor. IT just kind of flashed and went dark. I removed it from the loop, and the battery was actually fully charged. Can't figure out what went wrong, but it was like the battery had to warm up to work with the switch in the loop.

  • Wow! Great replies, thanks everyone. My son is very inquisitive which I encourage but sometimes he is a little overly independent. I had to put a padlock on my well pump so he wouldn't burn it out by turning it on without opening any spigots.

I'll put one of these solutions to use soon I'm sure.
  • I'd go with a waterproof marine grade switch like this. Mount it in a storage compartment if you can....

  • My disconnect switch is mounted right on the battery box. Not sure how to keep kids from playing with it. Maybe tell them not to?
  • I added a tool box between the propane tanks and TT. Inside the box is the battery and protruding out is a battery switch, very similar to what RoyB mentioned.

I kinda like the KEYED one idea like this one where you can remove the key if you like.

The ones that have a nice ID plate is kinda neat as well...

I use the BLUE SEA SEALED battery switches with my multiple battery setup. I like these because the contacts make before break so you can reduce the possibility of internal arcing of the contacts when switching under load.
