Problem installing Solar Panels

I have a 1999 National Tropical. I am trying to install solar panels, but all the spots I try to screw into don't seem to have plywood. I have tried 2-3" screws in different spots. I can see plywood from inside the rv around the vents, but my screws just spin and I can pull them out like they are screwed into air. I expected to hit plywood. The roof seems solid. I am at a loss.

obviously something's there or you would fall in
  • Lwiddis, when you drill into any surface you can feel the screw biting into it or not. My screws should be biting into the plywood. There has to be something under the thin rubber roofing. Even if the plywood was damaged and a screw stripped, it still wouldn't just pull right out. Installing the panels should have been one of the easiest parts of the install.

  • I have very limited space to fit the panels. I don't think I would be able to fit both sides of my panels right on the studs, but that is a good idea running long pieces aluminum into the beams. I still don't understand why I am not feeling any plywood under the rubber when I screw. It should be 3/8". I can see partially the plywood and rubber roofing material in the vent whole.
  • Try a stud finder. Can you access the roof from inside like a light or speaker hole? If so you will have a better idea of roof construction. You can also run long pieces of aluminum angle that is screwed into beams, etc. Well nuts might also be a good choice for you.
