Reface or paint cabinets?

I am disappointed in the peeling vinyl covering on some of the woodwork. The cabinet doors are not affected as much as the frames and trim. Has anyone successfully painted  or refaced their woodwork? Any suggestions are appreciated. BTW cabinets are made of some type of plywood, not mdf.

  • I have seen some crappy jobs painting and some very good painting jobs, it all depends if your willing to buy the right products and put the time in for the proper prep.

the problem with doors that have vinal that is pealing off is you have to take it all off then sand it properly, prime it and then paint it.  it is also best done with a sprayer so its a lot of time and renting of tools if you don't have the right sprayer.  replacing the doors is pretty easy but costs a little more money in exchange for you doing minimal work.

  • I had my cabinets refaced many years ago (20 yrs ago +/-). Mine were 1950ls era built in place wood cabinets. I am well satisfied with the refacing. The cabinet doors and hinges were removed and replaced as part of the project; I’m a little disappointed with the new doors. Overall I’d do it all again.
