RV A/C ceiling vent changes -- could use some tips

Good morning. I'd like to try to help my girls in their bunkhouse when summer camping since their room is always the warmest. I have a 40ft 5th wheel with a 15K roof A/C in the main living space as well as a 13.5K in the front bedroom. The main living space has about 6 A/C vents in the ceiling. Our bedroom has 2. The girls have a single one in their bunkhouse.

So a few things. First, I'd like to replace the ceiling vents with ones that have closeable louvers vs. the ones that are in there now that are fixed open. DW and I don't need the cool air from the central A/C unit in our bedroom since we have our own unit so I'd like to close off those two vents to allow that air to be used elsewhere. If we're warm, we'll turn on our bedroom A/C unit. I'd also like to close off a few of the vents in the main living space. My hope is that will allow enough air into the bunkhouse to help things out. The bunkhouse gets a good bit warmer than the rest of the coach.

I've done a little research and have seen some of the vents have a trim ring. Removing the trim ring gives access to the screws that hold the vents in place. But I don't see a trim ring on the vents that are currently installed...and can't figure out how to remove them. The vents are nothing special and similar to these: http://www.dwincorp.com/products/93/Jet-Stream-8950-Wide-Open-Louvered-RV-AC-Vent

The second question is wondering if anyone can point me to some information that shows me how all this ducting works in the ceiling? I may need to add an additional vent to the bunkhouse...but don't know how it all works and would like to determine if that can even be done...and how.

Thanks so much.

  • I have this very same issue in my TT. The bunkhouse gets very little air from the A/C. Worse yet, the five kids in there add to the heat.

    And the odor ;)

I was wondering if there was some sort of booster fan that could fit in the vent. I searched and searched in mods and on the internet. No dice.
  • We have the problem with the bed room being hot and the bunk room being to cold so in a pinch so the kids would not get so cold I popped the grill off(6" round) and put a coffee filter on it and snapped it back in took a pencil and started poking holes in the filter until the right amount of air was coming through. It balanced out the camper quite well. It has been like that for about 6 years now!

    No...no 3rd A/C prep -- just the two.

Thats a pain, where is your central 15k BTU A/C is it in the front half or rear half?

The 15K is right about dead center of the trailer.

My fifth wheel has TWO foam cut-in tracks from one end of the trailer to the other lined up on our centered roof mounted air conditioner. Not much we can do with changing any of our foam ducts.

I'm sure the trailer engineering group had a positive air pressure spec to follow for their particular air conditioner to allow all of the opened vents to provide equal air flow as much as possible..

fortunate for us our ceiling mounted vents which are mounted about every six feet along the ceiling all are push to open/close types.

I have also seen some vent covers in LOWES that you might modify to close off your open vents??? Something like these shown here

Perhaps you can contact your tailer manf and see if they have some info for you.

Thanks, Roy. The heat is much more balanced than the A/C is -- so I've not had to do much there. If their room was particularly cold in comparison to the rest of the coach, I could always give them a space heater. Not so easy with the A/C. It's more of an issue in our hot NC summer months when we have direct sun than in the cooler months, of course. During the day I open the large vent on the A/C itself to funnel most of the air in the middle of the coach when we're hanging out. But in the evening I close that so it gets distributed through the vents.

Good idea to call the manufacturer. I'll give that a shot at lunch today. The bunkhouse is pretty large. I would have expected more than one vent there -- but like you said, that could very well have met design spec. Closing off others vents to push more air there may be all that's needed to help or fix this.
