Screw Removal and Replacement

So the pivoting screw thingys that hold the beds up on a hybrid (unsure their real name) have all rusted up and are difficult to use. So I ordered new ones. My concern is, when I remove the existing screws, will new screws hold tight in the old holes. Or is it a good idea to fill those holes and put new screw holes nearby? Or is there any kind of hole filler to use?

Thanks
  • I just went through that exercise, replaced all of the painted #8 X 1" square drive with stainless steel. 100 plus in our teardrop trailer I am going from aluminum trim through Filon plywood sandwich into aluminum frame.

Use wood dowel, available at Home Depot, Lowes, etc, in a variety of diameters, secured in place with carpenter's glue. Since you're going to all this trouble though I'd personally be replacing those simple screw clamps with locking versions found on virtually all new hybrids built these days.

  • Unless the hole is enlarged you should be able to reuse the same hole. If it is enlarged then there are many ways to deal with it. You can get some golfing tees, tap one into the hole, cut it off flush drill a pilot hole and put in a new screw. One variation is to coat the tee with epoxy before tapping it in. I've heard of people using wooden matchsticks the same way but it seems to me that the wood used in matches is inferior to golf tee wood.

You can also fill the hole with epoxy either gel or epoxy putty and when it sets drill a new pilot hole. You can use wood filler, bondo makes some that sets quickly but it comes in a large container. Much more that you'll need.

There are many more ways to do this.
