Spare tire carrier question

Because of the rack I built for the back of my 5er, I don't have a good place to carry a spare tire. I searched and saw the suggestions for ideas like the BAL carrier but don't think that will work because my underside is covered with chloroplast.

What I'm wondering is if anyone has gotten a worm gear/cable carrier from a truck or van in a junk yard and used it for their spare?

Thanks

Mike

  • Already posted but you can get a BAL that will work with a sealed bottom. I have one on my Jayco...
  • I made my own mount to have the tire on top of the bumper vs extending to the rear as most OEM mounts do. Gave me enough clearance for my rack.

Thanks but it won't work either. I have a deck built on the back using one of the 2" receiver hitches on the bumper and two more 2" receivers bolted onto the frame. All this becomes the base for a platform thats almost as wide as the back bumper and I don't want to add the additional weight of a spare tire back there.

Just in case you didn't realize it but that mount is designed for use on the A frame up by your hitch.

    He's got a 5th wheel... :)

    OP:

I'd just steal the mount for a 3/4ton+ pickup from a junkyard, then weld/bolt in support crossmembers for it. Mock it all up in the driveway, then bolt/weld the whole thing into place under the trailer.

    :S That would make a difference :B

I've seen some FWH/TH's with the cable spare tire carrier that were stock with the hole for the extension rod in the side for attaching the crank. After looking at the ones Lippert makes from an earlier post here, that looks like my best option.

But I'm still interested in other ideas because it looks like I need to get a cross beam installed to mount it. But, that'll help support the chloroplast too.

  • The BAL Spare Tire Carrier will work with the coroplast. I installed one on our 5er, they make 3 or 4 different models and you have to select the one for the type of frame you have and with the coroplast. I love my BAL carrier.
