Spice Rack Over Microwave

Got a bit curious today while getting the trailer ready for our trip in 3 weeks. Wife was wanting a spice rack so I got to looking around. The area above the microwave really looked promising so I took the microwave out to see what was in there. Just a big empty space.

My plan was to create a rack where the black rectangle of plywood was. I did a little experimenting to check out how the plywood insert was attached in the framing. Seemed to be a bit of glue and some staples. I was able to pry it out without any issues but not really sure how I would be putting it back.

Anyway, I basically framed out a box and attached it to the black insert, which would be the back of the rack. I made it about 5 inches deep. I then stained it and amazingly it fit perfectly. I was able to drill two holes on each side and used these to put in wood screws in to the framing on the side 0f the microwave enclosure.

Sorry I didn't take any photos of the process, only have the end result. I think it will be great and the wife likes it. Honestly don't understand why this is not standard. There is certainly plenty of room up there.

I seriously doubt I'm the first to do this but haven't seen it before myself.

  • If that's for me then mine is actually pretty deep. I've thought I might put that little railing but haven't decided yet. I would look pretty fancy wouldn't it?
  • Nice job! I did similar under the sink on our first TT. Removed the faux panel under the sink and boxed it out for a spice rack. You might want to consider adding some Gallery Rail moulding to the front of yours. Stain to match the cabinets and it will keep stuff from falling out of there while underway.

  • Nice 12th. I didn't put any dividers as we only use a few spices. Garlic powder and Slap Yo Mama. Salt/Pepper have their own holder. But it's good for other things as well I'm sure.
  • It would work for that too. I didn't put any in there but I'm thinking they'll fit..hmmmmmm.

I've got the area over my fridge too but no way I want to mess with taking it out.

By the way, the trim around the micro is sharp. Of course we all know this, but I was reminded about it with a nice little slash on my wrist. Paper towel and duct tape fixed that problem.

My wife just rolls her eyes when she see's some of my bandaging efforts.
  • Very nice!
I've got an area like that over my fridge that I've been eyeing to hold coffee cups or something.
  • I love it.

It's awesome when you look around and make things happen with just a little motivation and craftiness.

Modifications are always fun. Except when something goes wrong. Don't ask me how I know that.
