Microwave/Convection Wire Racks

Thanks again for all your input regarding my original question. I did finally email Sharp Corp. customer service and received a prompt reply, as follows:

After researching your question, the wire racks are not recommended to
be used while using the microwave portion of the unit. The wire racks
are only recommended when using the convection portion of the unit.

I emailed back to inquire about the "mixing" type use where the oven goes from microwave to convection, mixing the type of use, as someone above mentioned. I have not received a reply to that question yet.

I've been doing a lot of "slow cooking" of late and often need a temperature in the range of 200-250 degrees and yes, you are right, there is no way to program that temperature directly. So I set the oven at a higher temp and using a digital probe thermometer plus open and shut the door method to adjust the temperature. Be nice to not go through all those gyrations.

On a Sharp you can select any convection temp shown on the keyboard and that's all, but what more do you need.

You can't enter something on the keyboard like 352!

The OP's question caused me to ACTUALLY read my manual from cover to cover for the first time ever:D.

Things I've learned so far:
When your mother house sits and you no longer have audible sounds between cycles and usage... do not assume she broke something and glide over the fact w/ your SO.
Press the "Custom Help" button (yanno, the one you've been glossing over for decades that's located at the top of the panel?)then "2", then "Start/Stop". It will either turn sounds on or off.

Combo cooking method....just hit me over the head and have done. Never ever done it.


Still reading to find out if I can convection cook at at temperatures not located on the presets without my normal gerrymandered version;).

Reading really IS fundamental:p.

I have used several Sharp convection/microwave ovens over the years in both RVs and Stick and Brick. I have used both wire racks for microwave. convection, and combo cooking for all of those years.

Note that the "High Mix" for roasting and "Low Mix" for baking options combine both microwave and convection cooking and a rack is specified for roasting and baking.

Of course, the purpose of the wire rack is to get heat under the item being cooked. Use the rack when that need is indicated.

since it causes no harm, we leave the low rack in the oven for storage all the time.

Our large Sharp at home has a metal turntable.

My new Frigidaire didn't say either, but I use it like my Sharp. Racks are used when using convection, out when using microwave. Actually in the Frigidaire, the wire rack is used on convection when using a 9 x 13 pan. The turntable cannot be turned off, so you put the rack in above the turntable and place the pan on top. It also has the stacking rounds racks for doing two layers of cookies, etc.

I Would call sharp and ask them. I have a Sharp in my Kitchen and it has all medtal inside and I leave the rack in when cooking all the time.

Thank you all for your thoughtful answers. This is a Model R1874/1875 Sharp. I cannot find an answer to the question in the manual; and different folks seem to have different opinions. I am thinking I will just remove the racks each time I use the microwave function, just to be on the safe side. Finding a place to put them away in my packed kitchen is the only issue. Once again, thanks for your input---and if anyone finds anything definitive in future, please let me know..

I've a Sharp microwave/convection. Same version for over 20 years and it states clearly in the manual the metal racks are ONLY for the convection function. This info is listed under the bolded subtitle "Accessories" at the bottom of page 10(English version) of the manual for models R930AK/R930AW/R930CS.
